Firefighters dodge corks as wine truck burns

Battling an intensely hot fire after a cargo truck crashed on a Wyoming highway, emergency crews were surprised to find themselves being shot at - by corks from exploding wine bottles inside.

'The corks were popping out of the bottles like the old Jiffy Pop (popcorn) we grew up with,' Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Keane said, bringing an unnecessarily obscure cultural reference into proceedings.

'My trooper got hit in the arm with one,' he added.

[Excerpt from an AP report]

But Keane says no one was injured, and the truck driver, Cyndy Brown of Arkansas, escaped the fire. Keane says the wreck likely was caused by a locked brake or hub malfunction.

Theresa Herbin, public relations specialist for the Wyoming Department of Transportation, said the wines , various bottles of merlot, pinot noir, reisling and sparkling wine from Washington and Oregon , have retail value of $20 to $50 each. The total value of the loss was not available.

“There’s nothing left of the cab or trailer,” Herbin said. “There were a few bottles that didn’t explode,” but they vanished overnight.

Jiffy Pop Popcorn is NOT an “unnecessarily obscure” cultural reference. The child that wrote this article just showed his, well, childishness. I bet he has no clue why the fire burned so hot.

bringing an unnecessarily obscure cultural reference into proceedings.

My, isn't reporter Tom Phillips quite the snooty whiny bitch of a metrosexual "male", and possibly restricted to only little-finger-in-the-air wine stories.

I remember when Jiffy Pop was considered high tech! That's how old I am...

But I was amused at how the reporter injected his opinion in the article:

"...bringing an unnecessarily obscure cultural reference into proceedings."

Couldn't he have omitted "unnecessarily?" Maybe it's just me.

Funny how as I was posting a reply to Star Traveler you both had the same thought regarding this reporter’s ignorance and bias. Glad to know there are some wide-awake FReepers at this early morning hour!

LOL!

Except that I’m not wide-awake and it isn’t early morning. LOL!

I’m on the island of New Guinea and I’m fixin’ to head to bed in a few minutes.

Yeah, that “unnecessarily” reference makes a person think about how long he has been around when it seems quite normal in retrospect... LOL...

What a lame analogy! The whole idea behind Jiffy Pop is that it does not explode all over the place.

The hot, intense nature of a diesel fire is what should have been looked at.

Cool! I’m going to build a bonfire for the holiday and throw a bunch of corked wine bottles in to see how it works.

I made my first pot of "on the stove" popcorn in about 25 years for Teddy's funeral.

Mmmm... It was good!
