Poll shows 51% in Ky. sure Obama was born in U.S. (Kentucky split on Obama's true birthplace)

FRANKFORT — Despite evidence that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, only a slight majority of Kentuckians think the Democratic president was born in the United States, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by Research 2000 and released by the liberal publication Daily Kos, showed that 51 percent of Kentuckians said they think Obama was born in this country. Twenty percent said they think he was born elsewhere, and 29 percent said they weren't sure.

"Sadly, that means 49 percent of Kentuckians are fully ill-informed," said Rep. Jim Glenn, an Owensboro Democrat and one of six African-Americans in the state House.

Although a liberal publication paid for the poll of 600 likely Kentucky voters, Research 2000 of Olney, Md., is an independent pollster routinely used by dozens of newspapers, including the Lexington Herald-Leader. The survey, conducted Aug. 31-Sept. 1, has a margin of error of four percentage points.

Respondents were asked: "Do you believe that Barack Obama was born in the United States of America or not?"

Beliefs about Obama's birthplace are divided along racial and political lines.

While 94 percent of black respondents said they think Obama was born in the United States, only 45 percent of white respondents were certain that he was born here.

Among Democrats, 72 percent said Obama was born in America. Nine percent answered no and 19 percent weren't sure.

Among Republicans, 30 percent said they think the president was born in the United States, 36 percent said they think he was born elsewhere and 34 percent were not sure.

Investigations by numerous media outlets, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning PolitiFact service of the St. Petersburg Times, have determined that Obama was born in Hawaii.

"I guess some people believe what they want to believe regardless of the facts," Glenn said.

State Rep. Reginald Meeks, a Louisville Democrat and an African-American in the state House, said the poll "shows at least half of Kentuckians are paying attention and realize the president was born in America.

"It shows the relationship between the media and an educated electorate."

Still, there is a flourishing culture of advocates — known as birthers — who are devoted to proving that Obama was born in Kenya and is not eligible to be president of the United States.

The conservative Web site WorldNetDaily claims that about 300,000 people have signed a petition demanding more information on Obama's birth.

Courts across the country have rejected the theory and Hawaii officials, citing Obama's "certification of live birth" and newspaper birth announcements, affirm that Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961.

The White House has said the issue is irrelevant.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele agrees.

The RNC released this statement last month: "Chairman Steele believes that this is an unnecessary distraction and believes that the president is a U.S. citizen.

"Chairman Steele wants to move beyond this conversation and continue discussing the real and immediate concerns that face American families like the economy and health care."

Until we see the ACTUAL documents, we only have the word of Zero and his media lackeys, and those are worthless.

I’m so “ill-informed” that I’d like that 51% to show me what “evidence” they have. I’m not a “birther” but I do have some serious doubts.

Over and over and over

We just say “Give us one piece of paper that we can hold in our hands that says Birth Certificate - long form, with doc’s signature and hospital name at the top”.

Witnesses?

Photos?

Anything?

And for this we get reviled kicked punched insulted.

Wow.

The WH calls the matter “irrelevant”. Is that an answer? Is that proof? Or just another way of ignoring the issue?

$12 for the piece of paper we want.

Never gonna happen cuz there is something there this man is hiding.

Common sense and anyone with a brain can see that.

Despite evidence

Nice objective journalism, pal.

What evidence? You poke the microphone in the face of someone who is "saddened" by this poll? You quote a press release from the RNC distancing themselves from birthers? Why not ask one of the respondents why they have their opinion?

How does anyone but the obamessiah know where he was born? Because he and the state run media tell us?

Sorry...he's not the messiah I put my faith in.

He's politician and I have less than zero trust in demonrat politicians and their state run media.

“Despite evidence that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, ... “

That “evidence” being an unauthenticated, alleged `Certificate of Live Birth,’ scanned by members of 0’s campaign committee and then e-mailed.
At least they seem to have given up on calling it a `Birth Certificate’ I’m guessing after schoolchildren visited the site and saw the words “Certificate of Live Birth” clearly printed on the paper.
(clearing throat) So it looks like we need an expert at these sorts of things, someone to examine the evidence and render an opinion.
I believe former CBS `bloodhound’ Dan Rather is spending a lot of time in the ol’ hammock this summer!

How ironic that he just happened to be born in a state that had questionable birth certificates in 1961 making it hard to prove that he wasn’t born there. I just think that that is too convenient.

The White House has said the issue is irrelevant.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele agrees.

As long as Mr. Steele heads the RNC, I won't be making any contributions. He is too lily-livered to be in a critical position. He has said not a word about the Van Jones situation, where a self-proclaimed communist was appointed by this loathsome administration to a job that apparently entailed control of a massive budget.

His failure to at least ask the Kenyan Clown to clearly and forthrightly document all of the circumstances of his birth and citizenship issues is a signal one. Americans should never have to question the eligibility of the man who occupies the White House --- it is incumbent on him to fully and clearly document his eligibility. It is corrosive to our political fabric to have even the least question attached to the legitimacy of a presidency, and there many, many questions here. We don't even know what hospital the man was born in.

Mr. Steele should insist that Obama allow the release of all of his vital records; insist that he release all of passports, current and expired; and insist that Obama show either his visa or his citizenship status for his long sojourn in Indonesia. He should then explain how all of those released records accord with natural born citizenship.

Just stop. All you need to do is to look at his college records. Surely the media folks have thought to look at all of obama's historical documents.
