Marco Rubio Criticizes Governor Crist
The Lakeland Ledger ^ | September 2, 2009 | Bill Rufty

If Marco Rubio's appearance in Lakeland on Wednesday is any indication of his support in his campaign for the U.S. Senate then Gov. Charlie Crist had better take notice.

Marco Rubio, former speaker of the Florida House and chief challenger to Gov. Charlie Crist for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senator, addressed the Lakeland Republican Club.

At the Cleveland Heights Golf Club, Marco Rubio, former speaker of the Florida House and chief challenger to Gov. Charlie Crist for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senator, addressed the Lakeland Republican Club.

Rubio, the former speaker of the Florida House who is challenging Crist for the Republican nomination, addressed a Lakeland Republican Club luncheon at Cleveland Heights Golf Course. The crowd that was expected to be about 160 grew to a little more than 190 and gave him three standing ovations.

His main message, to the audience and during an interview with The Ledger, was that Republicans should elect members of Congress who will stand up uncompromisingly to the "radical" economic policies of the administration of President Barack Obama. He implied that Crist wouldn't do that.

This guy is the real deal. I don’t understand why the RNC doesn’t promote younger conservatives such as Rubio. But then again, you’re talking about a party that supports Mark Kirk.

Yeah but he’s Cuban. That’s worth more votes in South Florida than you realize and considering that Martinez is retiring that might be an angle he can play. Plus, Crist is not as strong in the more culturally Southern areas as he needs to be so those aren’t automatically off limits to Rubio. Now, the Big Bend probably is to an extent (they haven’t liked any South Florida Cubans) but that Panhandle, Jacksonville and places like that definitely would support him and he would carry Dade in a general election.

Well Rubio is a protege of Jeb Bush and Bush's son is already publicly supporting him. The FL GOP has had a strong factional split for over 40 years, and the Bush side is going towards Rubio.

Lessee, Sen Rubio next year, and in a more perfect world Jeb would take out the smarmy Bill Nelson in 2012.
