Resident cracks bat on fleeing intruder
11:11 AM Sunday, September 6, 2009
SPRINGFIELD A resident in the 1600 block of East High Street reported that around 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 he arrived home to find his back door standing open and a blue racing bike lying on the ground. The lock on the door was on the ground and the door frame was damaged.
The resident told police he went into his garage to retrieve a metal baseball bat. As he returned to the back door a man walked out carrying the residents DVD player. He got on the bicycle and started onto East High Street.
The resident then struck the man in the back of the head with the bat. The man dropped the DVD player and sped off across High Street through a church parking lot and an alley. The resident told police he hit the intruder hard enough to crack the bat.
When the resident returned to his home he discovered his wifes jewelry, including a diamond wedding band, was also stolen.
Needs batting practice to be able to park one.
Damn ObamaCom zombies! This place is turning into “The Night of the Living Dead.”
Cracked an aluminum bat? That’s one hard-headed ... thief.
He needs more time in the batting cage.
OK... just wait for someone to show up at the emergency room with a dent in his skull...
I watch too much TV. Check the local hospitals for people with head injuries acting stupidly.
I am a little puzzled here. I did not know metal baseball bats would crack like wooden ones. Assuming metal bats can crack, how does a guy run away after being hit so hard it would crack the bat? Any other thoughts?

"You're going to need a bigger bat."
He should have stuck the bat into the spokes.
With a bat, go for the knees. You can finish up later, if you are so inclined.
Too bad there’s no such thing as a double-tap with a baseball bat.
Young "journalist" has never played with or heard of wooden bats.
Homeowner was old like you and I and had a wooden bat?
PING!
Aluminum bats can crack and dent. If it breaks, it’s usually the barrel, not the bat handle. Very rarely happens.
He had to have used a wooden one and should have had the label up.
A player in the 2003 Women’s College Softball World Series broke an aluminum bat. Not on anyone’s head, though.
“Cracked an aluminum bat? Thats one hard-headed ... thief.”
The thief was probably Amish.
I heard a story from a female softball player who was very strong.
She didn't want to keep a gun in her house, but she kept a softball bat handy.
She walked into the house one night after work and a guy grabbed her. They struggled until she got her hands on the bat and started hitting him.
The next thing she remembered was that he was laying on the floor and not moving.
She called 911 and told them "there is a guy laying on my floor, I am not sure if he is dead or alive".
A double tap + ?
