Howard Dean said Van Jones was "brought down" and calls his resignation a "loss for the country." Dean said Van Jones didn't intentionally sign a petition blaming the government for 9/11.

And he didn’t deliberately say that white people were deliberately polluting minority neighborhoods, or that only white teenagers would implement murder at Columbine and that black teens wouldn’t do that. Of course the black teens in the south side of Chicago are shooting each other off at the rate of 32 per month in Obama’s own former district.
He didn’t deliberately say either that he intends to use his green movement to implement the Marxist change of American society.
Just like they’ll claim that Mark Lloyd the new FCC ‘diversity’ czar didn’t deliberately give a speech admiring Hugo Chavez’s takeover of all the press in Venezuela. OR that he intends to do the same in the US with his ‘localism’ policy.

From what I hear them say, a lot of people on the left, like Dean, agree with the comments Jones has made regarding American racism, prejudice, imperialism, exploitation of minorities, brutality towards third-world countries, etc. They just phrase their ideas a little less directly.
So to them, Jones was indeed the object of a "smear" because there was nothing wrong with what he said. The mistake Jones made was that he was too explicit - should have used some "nuance," which would have given him some cover - like "taken out of context," "misinterpreted," etc.
My friend offered to work for the census and had taken a test, easily passed, but was never called upon to take part in the census. I believe this was a scam to simply bring in the Acorn mobsters and skew the vote. Most of these Demoncrats who were voted in with a slimey and crooked rigging of the vote here in Colorado. Astonishing and out rageous behavior from the radicals in Colorado, we now have this “secret” candidate in the Senate, placed there by the commies in the DNC. Senator Udall and his “pal” Senator Bennet, a virtual unknown with nothing but family connections and a communist agenda. We are hoping to not elect the appointed one and then rid our wonderful State of the stench of the Udall family.
They know how to vote for bills without reading them.
They know republicans are EVIL
They know Cuba has the best health care system in the world.
