"The bombs the government drops in Iraq are the bombs that blew up in New York City," said Van Jones, director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, who also warned against forthcoming violence by the Bush Administration. "The US cannot bomb its way out of this one. Safety at home requires justice abroad."
Oakland, CA (September 13) - Hundreds of people gathered at Snow Park in Oakland tonight to mourn, provide support for each other, and speak out against violent United States policies at home and abroad, which they say are the underlying reasons for unprecedented terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington DC. Organizing against a growing climate of racism, nationalism and anti-Arab bigotry was a focus of the rally.
Organized by youth and people of color in Oakland and San Francisco, solidarity speakers included supporters of Palestine, people returning from the WCAR in South Africa, police brutality activists, anarchists and socialists, anti-gentrification activists and other people representing dozens of cultures and ethnicities. International solidarity was the theme as community and activist groups stood together against the threat of more US violence. Michael Franti of Spearhead also spoke, saying that "we need to be in a war against war."
In addition to an open mic, people at the rally talked with friends and strangers, cried, and began coming to terms with the events of the last three days. Many people who attended have family members still missing on the east coast. And many others have been the target of increased racism and discrimination during times of crisis in the United States, like the Oklahoma City bombing or Gulf War.
A recurring theme of the speakers was the brutal violence committed by or supported by the United States government on a daily basis.
In a diverse international community shocked by recent world events, deep feelings about the United States government were expressed. A young Puerto Rican person said that "the belly of the beast had something back to eat." A young Filipino human rights activist said that "when we found out what kind of place got hit, we were kind of glad to see the Pentagon burning. But we also know that thousands of Puerto Ricans, Haitians and other workers were in those buildings." An African-American man who works on gentrification issues in West Oakland said that "we're always seeing Americans drop bombs on people. We watch the Vietnamese get bombed, Iraqis get bombed, Palestinians get bombed, now it has come home to roost." Japanese-Americans spoke about internment camps and the nuclear holocaust brought on by US militarism.

From a report at Indybay.org Sept. 13, 2001.
Yes you guys are right.
Heard people saying stuff just like this just days after 9/11. Changed everything.
Oh, and please dont lecture me on how these are our fellow Americans and all. That old dog just wont hunt anymore!
He already has. Van Jones and his commie ally Lennox Yearwood are heading up the White House’s Green For All propaganda effort this Sept. 11.
Thanks for the ping AV
Was just looking at other threads re Van Jones.
He is an In Your Face pick.
0 thinks he is the One and the public won’t care
or will know nothing of his background.
But, here is the worst, Van Jones is only one of tens of dozens all alike in Obama’s adm.
For some reason, I think when 0bama and Van Jones say “Gree for All” they’re talking about the color of Islam...

You don’t understand... they started out West the ‘day’ it happened. I don’t get it either... you figure the shock would take months as well as the UN visits on the run-up before they let loose.
Michael Moore put forth right after it remember?
Same on the east coast as well.
You aren’t dealing with normal people. 30 years of indoctrination (it’s our fault), and they said ‘We deserved it’, right away. Never witnessed anything like it.
See Seven Days in September, the Union Square scene... it’s how it was.
The "Gulf War" was in 1990.
I suggest we all FLY the DON’T TREAD ON ME FLAG on September 11th!!!
You’re not the only one who has noted the Green convergence.
IMPEACH, CONVICT, AND REMOVE OBAMA!

I wonder if he was referring to the bombs dropped on Baghdad by President Clinton in 1998. That’s the funny thing about the peace activists at any rally you see. They always name G.W. Bush or G.H. Bush or Ronald Reagan when they condemn a bloodthirsty United States for dropping bombs on people (though I don’t recall Reagan starting any wars) but they somehow “forget” that Bill Clinton used our military to blow up people and things in Haiti, Sudan, Bosnia and Iraq.
And now that Van Jones (former director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights) is working for Mr. Obama, I wonder if he’ll condemn his boss for sending tens of thousands more troops into Afghanistan to step up the bombing in that country.

What took him so long, was he sleeping off a night out with Obama?
I saw the same thing in D.C. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at Dupont Circle. The commies held a ‘Blame America’ march.
He was talking about the first Gulf war, did you forget that one?
I think Jones was referring to the '91 Gulf War and Bush 41.
Now let us start the counter campaign against the Color Of Change pressured advertising boycott of Glen Beck’s TV show.
The basis is to write letters to the company CEO’s, marketing and public relations offices to point out that we must judge a person by the company he keeps.
Submit all of Jones’ racist and bigoted remarks as the case in point that it was at the request of Jones created organization that they submit to the boycott in the first place.
So in essence Beck was entirely correct that Obama is at least a bigot at at worst a racist for allowing this lowlife into the white house and they were duped.
How can we get him impeached with this Congress?
