EDMONTON A University of Alberta researcher was surrounded by wolves, had to cancel her research season and be evacuated from the high Arctic earlier this summer after a pilot with an ecotourism agency left cardboard boxes of bacon and sausage on the tundra near their camp.
The wolves ripped open the boxes of meat and gorged themselves.
Catherine La Farge, who studies the colonies of moss exposed by retreating glaciers, was not attacked during the incident on Ellesmere Island, but she and her field assistant spent three hours cleaning up food and debris strewn across the landscape. Then they were confined to their kitchen tent to guard the leftovers and garbage.
Even banging pots and pans didnt frighten the wolves off.
They kept circling, said La Farge. It was just so unlike their previous behaviour.
Weir said the food was supposed to be placed in an underground cache. The organizers were hoping to do it themselves, but their travel plans changed at the last minute and the task was left to the Twin Otter pilot who landed and left the food on the ground.

International Bacon Day ping - is there anything bacon can’t do?
I can’t for the life of me figure out why I pinged you to this.
Oh boy it’s BACON!!!!
}:-)4
It sounds to me like the ecotourism pilot saved HER bacon.
A union pilot.
Free range bacon.....whoo hoo!
I alway try banging a .44 mag or two to scare off wolves. I can't imagine going off into the wilderness without a firearm. These people deserve to be eaten.
I can see the Canadian government now fining the researchers for feeding wildlife illegally and giving the wolves pancreatitis by letting them gorge on bacon.
This is really an incredible piece of “journalism”. It’s like someone sat down and wrote out the whole story in a clear, coherent, and chronologically-organized way, then printed it out, then carefully snipped out each individual sentence with a pair of scissors, then stuck the sentences in a lottery barrel, spun it around, pulled out sentences one by one and pasted them into the new article in the order they were pulled out.
If I were a 9th grade english comp teacher and this was submitted to me I would not only give an F grade, I’d have the student drug-tested.
LOL!
How can people be this dumb? If you are going into the wilds where wolves and bears range freely and you don't take a rifle and/or shotgun, you are too dumb to be going and should stay home.
Bingo!
The irony of an "ecotourism agency" leaving bacon and sausage around is almost as delicious as the bacon and sausage.
Bacon and sausage?!?!? I’m shocked! You mean ecotourists aren’t all vegans? /s
Maybe she figured she could throw some moss at them.
