MOSCOW, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow dismissed on Thursday comments by a U.S. administration official suggesting that Russia could become a member of NATO.
Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon said on Tuesday that Washington would consider Russian membership in the military alliance, which was founded in 1949.
He said NATO should be open to European democracies, adding that "if Russia meets the criteria and can contribute to common security, and there is a consensus in the alliance, it shouldn't be excluded."
Russia's envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin said Gordon's comments "are not serious enough" and that the U.S. was trying to "take advantage of our weaknesses" to advance into a territory "that we once occupied or controlled or influenced."
He also said NATO would never be able to reach a consensus on Russia's membership as long as former Soviet republics Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania were members.

One of Russia’s goals is to drive a wedge between Europe and the US so they can deal with the spineless EU as opposed to NATO. From the vantage point of AMerican interests this makes no sense.

NATO stopped "having a reason for being" back when the Warsaw Pact was dissolved, Germany reunited, and the Soviet Union ceased to exist. It's long past it's 'sell by' date and should have been dissolved long ago.
So he can hand them all our secrets and strategies and they won't have to go to the trouble of spying and stealing them.

Could be he is just stupid? The Russians, not so much.
I hate to enlighten you but.....Russia has not been Communist for quite a while.
He wants to have his communist bretheren riding shot gun for him on NATO.That will allow Oflamaba to drastically cut his defence budget and spend the money on his "poh" folk entitlement programs, and establshing his civilian police force.
Its all about the Obama dime, and redistributing defence dollars into the lefty communities he has established.
