Pundit: Rangel Becoming Democratic 'Albatross'
House Republican Leader Calls For Embattled Congressman To Resign; Dems Could Face Midterm Election Trouble
Sep 4, 2009 5:47 pm US/Eastern

NEW YORK (CBS) - House Republican leader John Boehner says Charlie Rangel is his friend.

But he also says "friends are not infallible, they make mistakes … and when mistakes are made in the course of public service, accountability is necessary."

Boehner is calling on Congressman Rangel to step aside. In a "Dear Charlie" letter Boehner reminded Rangel about the skepticism Americans now have about those who govern.

"As we have witnessed this summer," Boehner wrote, "that skepticism is intensifying, in some cases into open anger -- anger fueled by congressional actions that demonstrate a fundamental disrespect for the sacrifices made on a daily basis by citizens and their families throughout the country.

"I urge you not to allow yourself to become an emblem of this disrespect."

Republicans quickly took up Boehner's line.

"Charlie Rangel has no problem taking a time out from paying his taxes or a time out from financial responsibility. He should take a time out from his leadership position," said National Republican Committee spokesman Tory Mazzola.

But with the House Ways and Means Committee proposing a controversial new tax to pay for health care and Rangel's ethics problems mounting, experts say Rangel's ethics problems could help Republicans pick up between 20 and 40 seats in the House in the midterm elections next year.

**SNIP**

Could Rangel and his ethical lapses end up being an albatross around the necks of Democrats?

"I think every Democratic member of Congress with outstanding ethical charges can become an albatross and the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee becomes a particularly attractive target," Birdsell said.

Wonder who Charlie pissed off to get all this bad press, now.

All these Congressmen and women have terrible skeletons in their closets. If we don't vote them out, maybe the Islamics will. Unfortunately they see We the People as more of a threat than international terrorism. They think they are above sudden death, too.

Ding ding ding ding ding! We have a winner.

Add to that the fact that the Republicans would never pin a crooked or crazy Democrat to another Democrat (think "Reverend" Wright) and it becomes obvious that the Democrats aren't going to be hurt by this AT ALL.

LOL I think it’s a little too late for the Dems to be worrying about reelction. They should’ve thought abut that beofre they went with Cap and trade and healthcare take over both which are objected to be about 80% of registered voters.Dump Charlie but I don’t think it will make any difference in their standings with the voters.

The man is a criminal and should be in prison. There is such a double standard. If Rangel was a Repub he would be on death row at this point. Sickening.

I keep wondering what Rangel has on Pelosi or is she so pathetically trying to hang on to every dim who can vote that she thinks she can get away with ignoring this. A showdown is coming because Pelosi’s has to be getting a lot of negative comments over her brushing this under the rug. This is so outrageous it's beyond the pale!

They shouldn’t be asking Charlie to step down. They should loudly and forcefully DEMAND that he step aside and DEMAND that he give up his seat in the house. They should raise hell until everyone in this country knows about this and Pelosi’s refusal to enforce ethics in the house.

They should ask themselves “what would the democrats do if this were a Republican?” And then do it.

Maybe Rangel can be this congress’ Dan Rostenkowski. I seem to recall between the house banking scandal and the post office money laundering, Republicans were able to make some hay and pick up seats.

Collect money.

Her husband, Paul Pelosi, has wide real estate, stock, and bond holdings, including San Francisco condos, a Napa Valley vineyard, a hotel resort in Rutherford, Calif., and at least a $1 million investment in a San Francisco limousine business.

Pelosi's 1996 stock purchases included Compurad Inc., Fritz Companies Inc., Fusion Medical Tech Inc., Hambrecht and Quist Group, Getty Communications, Odwalla Inc., and Vanguard Airlines Inc. Her spouse cashed in more than $50 million worth of common stock in Container Programs Inc., an equipment leasing company. Her husband owns a cable TV services operating company, a restaurant operating company, and much, much more. She reports joint holdings of at least $10.6 million.

Well this is a familiar refrain around here, but can you imagine what would happen if Rangel were a Republican?
