More Americans say they would marry for money even if it doesn't buy love

Forget "richer or poorer" - when Americans marry, they're decidedly looking for someone to show them the money. A recent survey by the Connecticut firm, Prince & Associates, showed that two-thirds of 1,134 people polled nationwide would marry an average-looking person they liked if they had money - and by money, they meant in the ballpark of $1.5 million. Survey respondents had incomes between $30,000 and $60,000, the national median. Russ Alan Prince, who studies the wealthy, explains the phenomenon simply: "People want to have the good life." "Most people get upset because it's politically incorrect - well, so is life," Prince says. "People want the money, it's not a big secret. Once again, 'I'm living on $30,000 a year, if I had a million dollars I don't have to do this nonsense job anymore' - that actually can be appealing to a lot of people." But the survey respondents were savvy enough to know that money can't buy them love: A full 43 percent said they expected they'd probably end up divorced from their dreamed-of money mate. Though gold-digging has a long, storied history, today's divorced daters aren't doing it any more than in the past, says Rosalind Sedacca, founder of the Child-Centered Divorce Network and author of "How Do I Tell the Kids about the Divorce?"

Given the economy, people would be better off marrying for gold.

Been single 14 years and am loving the freedom. If I ever marry again I’ll have to be bat_sht crazy head over heels in love with someone. I don’t know that I can ever get that way again but it’s gotta be the person, not the money.

Know the feeling. Maybe you'll be better off finding a foreign lady LOL.

Put that gold in an offshore bank deposit box & you've got a deal, lol.

But seriously, why should money be any different than looks or intelligence or any other characteristic associated with love (or lust)? Someone who is well off is usually smart, motivated, hard-working & odds are they are not a dissolute wastrel living in their Mom's basement. Nobody dreams of marrying a slacker anymore than they dream of marrying an ugly person, do they? (Alas, love sometimes puts paid to the best laid hopes even then.)

Probably it'd be more instructive to ask people what traits they wouldn't consider in a partner. For me, it would be a lack of a good sense of humor. If you don't have that, all the money, smarts & looks in the world can't compensate for the sheer unadulterated hell of being trapped in the same room with a glum, humorless prig for the rest of your life. ;-)

Trouble is finding someone of the opposite sex who is semi-rational on a day to day basis, and quiet.

parsy, who isn’t even looking anymore

You'll be dead for a real long time.
You just can't prevent it.
So if money can't by happiness.
I guess I have to rent it.

Of course, in real life, a person who was able to earn $1.5 million while still being of marrying age wouldn’t be likely to marry a person whose self-worth was so low they would marry without love simply to get money the easy way.

Can't even imagine someone taking care of me. I spend most of my time fending off women who want to climb on my back and ride me to town...LOL!
