Defense Secretary Robert Gates is objecting in the strongest terms to an Associated Press decision to transmit a photograph showing a mortally wounded 21-year-old Marine in his final moments of life, calling the decision appalling and a breach of common decency.
The AP reported that the Marines father had asked in an interview and in a follow-up phone call that the image, taken by an embedded photographer, not be published.

It is plain to me that AP ran the picture to give the Left more fodder to propagandize against the war. It is another example of their hypocrisy.
I think the pictures of the planes hitting the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and that field in Pennsylvania should have been shown everyday since 9/11/01 to accentuate the danger we face from the fundamental Islamists and to honor those who died.
Why haven’t they been? According to the Leftists media, to respect the feelings of the families of those who died in the attack.
Communists are despicable and they have just about taken over. Keep up the good fight!
These same people would not show the beheadings of numerous kidnapped Americans because it would be “upsetting” to their families.
Maybe someone should shoot the AP reporter and photograph it to show the ravages of a journalism that has no decency.
What a$$holes.
Should there ever be another civil war in this country (who am I kidding? I give us 24 months tops until the commencement of hostilites), the AP will not be embedded on our side. In fact, I will make it a point to embed them in the ground.
I have always said the msm are the ones we need to “take care of” they are the mouthpiece and propoganda machine of the demonrats.
Lets have a report on their own demise, now THAT i would be interested in.
Anyone send this to Drudge? AP are scum. They are pro-islamic and pro-obama.
Oddly the Russian professor who thinks the USA will splinter and break apart soon said Gates might be the person who could hold it together.
Gates ran the CIA and maybe the way to hold it together would be a Kenyan BC that might get leaked.

It is a shame that they cannot abide by the wishes of the family.
In our case, nothing graphic was shown, but seeing footage of the actual ambush on ABC the very next day was unreal. I know of a Mom who allowed the last living moments of her son to be shown on Baghdad ER.
As far as the media is concerned, perhaps this is relevant.

Chao: Define, “people in uniform”
I serve part time in the Marines, in a combat role no less, and if the $#!7 hits the fan, I’ll be one of the first on the line to die. I’m an E-2, so I don’t get paid jack-squat either. And technology? My issued M16A2 rifle was built by Colt and has a very low serial number, and Colt lost the contract to build M16’s for the US government to FN Manufacturing in 1988....
Hey, I agree that the “suits” who run gigantic corporate enterprises that make cutting-edge technology are more interested in money than the well-being of mankind, and frankly it disturbs me that wealth and power are becoming one. I know that sounds wierd for someone studying engineering, but I’m also buddhist, so wealth and materialism is pretty darned low on my priority list anyway.
One thing keeps popping up in my mind though... a couple years ago I swore an oath, that I would “...support and defend the Constitution of the United states against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same...”
I didn’t join up to be part of some government conspiracy—I joined because I thought it was just one small way that I could contribute to the people of this country... although the discipline didn’t hurt much either. As I think back to that oath, something about all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC... I wonder who is really to blame for the degredation of the American society.
My money’s on the American mass media. It seems like you can’t turn on the news without seeing news reports about the death and destruction, and commercials that seem to subtlely induce worthlessness or fear, offering solace in the consumption of goods and services. The way I see it, people in this country (and the attitude is spreading across the globe), are encouraged by corporations and broadcasters to spend more and acquire more stuff, inducing a sense of security in material wealth. Some things, even tradition, can have a spin put on them to make the public needlessly wary—even fearful. Why aren’t houses in this country built with big front porches anymore? Probably because we know more about fictional TV characters than we do our own neighbors....
Though I think this veritable brainwashing may not have been intentional, the people who cultivate this sort of society have a lot of the general public in their pocket, and many are trying to use their positions to reshape the world the way they think it should be, not taking into account any consequence of their actions.
Given a choice and an opportunity, I’d gladly do my part to “restructure” the commercial institutions that poison the society whose flag will one day be draped over my coffin. [/rant] Country: Iraq ~ Posts: 175 ~ Member Since: 09/01/2003 ~ Last Visit: 01/11/2005”
RE: Your tagline: Your loss - the sacrifice of your son is felt deeply here.
already posted.
Give it a rest....
I did a title search myself to see if this had been posted and nothing came up. I did a keyword search and this was the only thread that appeared.
If it was posted before, whoever posted it didn't do a very good job of making it visible.
I didn't see it the first time and don't object to having something like this posted more than once.
Just because the Constitution forbids Congress from making laws that restrict freedom of speech, doesn’t mean that everything OUGHT to be posted.
Common sense, common courtesy, and general decency can play into it.
If the family wishes to have the photos not shown, their wishes should be respected.
I hope that AP catches more than enough flak for this. It was out of line.
Karl was wise beyond his years. But...YOU knew that.
Knowing how difficult reading stuff like this is for you, please know you and Karl remain in our hearts and minds.
You may recall how much I LOATHE the ENEMEDIA!!!
You may not know how much I have always despised that puke Gates. With this story, the circle is complete.
But does President Bush get any credit for not allowing it?
NOOOoooooooo!
Thank you!
This would be hideous enough if the AP photographer had coincidentally been in the area when the blast happened... but the ONLY reason Julie Jacobson was there to snap that picture was that she was an officially embedded photographer working professionally for the AP.
She betrayed one of the soldiers that was providing her protection to do this job.
I think they should end the embedded journalists.... if they want to be “war zone photographers”, “neutral”, “telling the real story”, then let them experience the dangers and real story equally with all the other battlefield victims.
Very well said, Justa.
When articles like this bring our attention to the total lack of respect many have for our fighting forces I don't have the words to express the helpless feelings I have towards the cowardly enemedia. It seems they always have an excuse for a blatant abuse of the freedom that's guaranteed them in our Constitution. The editors that made the call to publish this should all be in an unemployment line.
I'll second Justa's remark on Karl, POP. Thanks for the ping, Justa.
From info in the article, the AP people directly involved were Alfred de Montesquiou-the reporter; Julie Jacobson- the photographer; and Ken Teh- TV images.
