Defense Secretary Robert Gates is objecting in the strongest terms to an Associated Press decision to transmit a photograph showing a mortally wounded 21-year-old Marine in his final moments of life, calling the decision appalling and a breach of common decency.
The AP reported that the Marines father had asked in an interview and in a follow-up phone call that the image, taken by an embedded photographer, not be published.

State run AP media - defends their actions as a tribute to his service and memory despite the family's expressed desire the photos not be published.
The 4th estate - looking out for you America!

About the time this posted a similar article directly from Politico was posted. Can be deleted as a dupe if needed.

Gates opened the door for this kind of bs when he supported Obama allowing reporters access to returning KIA.
As for the AP, they suck. Nothing new there.

How about a picture of the last moments of life of a young AP reporter, or an older AP reporter, or an AP manager or AP editor.
Such things are, of course, possible.
No doubt they'd think it tasteless to do, and they'd certainly be aghast at the idea that such a thing had been arranged for.
Barring that, maybe someone could go dig up an already dead AP staffer's grave and take some pictures. Publish 'em on the net. Maybe prop up the corpse for a better display.
It's like thinking of things that can be done with Westboro Church's ghoul team.

Gates must be really out of touch if he thinks the AP has any concern over “common decency”.

Certainly the Taliban needs money. No doubt arrangements can be made with the other side ~ with AP’s own people ~ to get ‘er done!

“Appalling” is not a strong enough word.
To: BlueNgold
That should garner a Pulitzer and invitation to the White House.

Extending on my idea of a comparable picture of an AP employee, maybe Gates could ask for a platoon or so of AP folks and just send them out there in front of the Marines to "look around first".
I'm sure something would happen. Then we could get a lot of photos.
Bet AP doesn't have a hair.

AP sucks in every way. If it comes on I turn it off, don’t read it.
What would really make a good photo is the death of AP.

If I were part of that embedded AP news crew, I would get out of town fast; unless I wanted my family to see the details and photos of my dead body.
Tell me again did the AP deem it newsworthy to publish the details of the killing of of Mary Jo K during the T Kennedy funeral extravaganza? Probably did not want to cause any pain to the Kennedy Klan.
