Northside, North East (Schools) to Scrap President's Speech. (I love San Antonio!)

Bexar County's (San Antonio,Tx.) two largest school districts said today they will not show President Obama's controversial 'address to students' in their schools, and will leave it up to parents whether the speech should be viewed by their kids, 1200 WOAI news reports.

The speech, which is set for 11AM CDT on Tuesday, has become controversial, because many conservative groups have said they are afraid the president will use the speech to try to convince children to support his political policies, and convince their parents to do the same.

"What North East ISD is going to do is tape the President's address and place it on our web site, where parents can access it and watch it at home if they so choose," North East's Deb Caldwell said.

Northside is adopting a similar policy, saying the district's web site will link to the speech and it will be up to parents whether to watch it or not.

At North East, Caldwell says the speech is set to occur during the start of the lunch period, which is a very hectic time of day and a time when many students aren't in their classrooms anyway, but she says there are no plans to show it in class at any time.

"We will have the link available for those parents who do want to show it to their students at home, but we don't plan to show it during the school day," Caldwell said.

Some parents have requested that schools which will show the speech allow their child to 'opt out.' Those districts say there will be no punishment for students who choose not to watch the speech, and for teachers who chose not to teach it.

Caldwell says North East parents should not consider keeping their kids home.

"If parents are thinking about keeping their students at home because they don't want them to see the address, that's not an issue in North East, because we won't be airing it," she said.

Good for them. I hope the sentiment catches on elsewhere.

Uh oh... Baroke Obama and Van “Ex-con Commie Cop Killer Lovin’” Jones are about to learn that they are not the only ones who know how to organize a community.

America is waking up.

Go Texas!! Who will follow?

Thanks for the ping. This is good news. Maybe some of the other districts will do likewise.

Pasadena (Texas NOT California) ISD is opting out...

Took them long enough...

One thing we might want to keep an eye out for...

There are several classrooms around the country that are operating under the direct support of Obama’s stimulus package handout...My wife, a first year teacher in PISD, signed a letter acknowledging this fact...Her job may be in jeopardy because of the districts turn on this issue...

I really hope cooler heads prevail...

If not, then we know (obviously) that it is not about the kids anymore...

I'm glad to see you got a response, but he just couldn't help but put in the jibe at the end.
Regardless of political party, adults should model respect for the office of the President of the United States.
I would email him back telling him it's no business of his how you, as a parent, should model anything. I'd go on to say that if he and his fellow educators would stick to the 3 R's, we'd have never gotten into this situation in the first place. Further, it's statements like his that we freedom loving Americans are fed up with. WE will decide what's best for us and our children - NOT the government.

Isn’t it against the law for any leader (in this country) to inject politics int public school policies? (or something to that effect)

Looks like Round Rock, Georgetown and Leander are the only ones opting out around here.

nope...not the only ones...

I’m really excited to see the ramifications of our labors...

My advice to them is to ignore this and let it go...

But if they really want to go down with the ship...By all means press the buttons and retaliate against these schools and districts that see their attempt to interrupt the approved cirriculum and inject their own intrusive BS...

Its really the job of the parents to do what Obama says he wants to do...But we all know that this particular effort is designed to create the rift needed to interject MORE intrusions...

Who knows...I bet they are going to try again...Wouldn’t surprise me one bit...
