Noted in the New York Times on January 5, 2006: "There was nothing in the original Constitution of 1787 that barred a third or fourth term for presidents. That was why ... in 1947, after sporadic public debate, Republicans demanded presidential term limits and changed the Constitution." and "'We ought to take a serious look and see if we haven't interfered with the democratic rights of the people,' Ronald Reagan said in 1986." The article further states: "(They) ... can hope that in another world crisis, this misbegotten amendment will not be there to bar a future Franklin Roosevelt from offering the kind of leadership that he provided in the 1940's."

He has to get a 2nd term before a 3rd is considered.

Wow, now that’s ambition! Focus on a third term while he’s sinking like a stone before his first year’s up?

Such a distraction. Obama is a one-termer.

This should make everyone real suspicious of....the anti-Birthers.

The anti-Birthers may be enabling Obama in more ways than one. Its bad enough that there may be one Obama term.

Of course, the 22d Amendment would have to be repealed....but hey, we now have faux-cons who want us to ignore whether he is a natural citizen or not....

If Obama is even elected to a 2nd term, I go along with Hillery Clintons 23 may 2008 election campaign prediction that Obama won’t live through it.

THIS is the time we are glad we didn’t make rash mistakes in the past. God save us from another Roosevelt. Or another Bush for that matter.

The country would be so much better today if FDR was never elected in 1940.

For starters, Roosevelt was a big fan of Joseph Stalin and most of the messes we had to clean up in the next 60 years was because of that.

Also, Roosevelt never took the idea of his successor seriously. He didn't even have a vice-president for years, and the ones he did have were mostly kept in the dark. Harry Truman had quite a learning curve when he suddenly became president during World War II.

Gee? Did they want Bush for a third term? Oh, those nasty Republicans 'demanding' term limits and messing with the Constitution. NYT, just earning their keep, planting the idea that it's time to make Changes to the Constitution but only by the Dems.

I’ll make a deal. Repeal the 16th and 17th amendments and we’ll agree to repeal the 22nd amendment.

This is one time I respectfully disagree with the Gipper.

I understand what he’s saying...because I felt that way too at one point.

BUT... I am now convinced that all elected officials should have term limits to ensure that they don’t make a career out of it and entrench themselves in their own power base and to ensure that they have to live under the laws they pass.

Presidents... 2 terms.
Senate...at most, 2 terms.
Congress...at most, 3 terms.

“Presidents... 2 terms.

Congress...at most, 3 terms.”

I agree whole heartedly. While we are at it, let’s repeal the ammendment that makes the Senate popularly elected. It needs to represent the states again.
