For politicians with major bad news to make public, there's no time like the dead of August to do it....the public won't remember a thing come September. We hope Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) will have no such luck. His belated revelation of previously unreported income, property and bank accounts demands that he step aside as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Mr. Rangel's amended financial disclosure form, which exposes omissions from his 2002 through 2006 records, is a treasure trove of outrage. He neglected to report a checking account with the Congressional Federal Credit Union and one with Merrill Lynch, each valued between $250,000 and $500,000; the tens of thousands of dollars he's earning from dividends from a number of mutual funds and stocks; and the money made from the sale of a Harlem townhouse. As a result, Mr. Rangel's reported net worth doubled, from between $516,015 and $1,316,000 to between $1,028,024 and $2,495,000.
We called on Mr. Rangel to resign his coveted post last November...Mind you, that committee already was looking into his using official stationery to raise funds for that pet project, paying below-market rents on four Harlem apartments, failing to report income from a Florida condominium sale and failing to pay taxes on a home in the Dominican Republic. There's another subcommittee investigation into lobbyist-paid trips by Mr. Rangel and four other members of Congress.
Much is expected of elected officials. Much more is expected and demanded of those entrusted with chairmanships...Mr. Rangel has violated that trust continually and seemingly without care.

Call your elected officials...complaign to high-heaven.
The Dems must have decided that Charlie must go. Probably to get someone else who will be even more compliant than Charlie. The WP is just another organ of the Dem Party.
finally.
Too bad they think a college thesis 20 years ago is more important.
Theres nobody in the world I'd rather have write tax policy for the whole country, than Charlie Rangel. He's as honest as the day is long! A couple mistakes ain't nothin!
Talk about mixed feelings. I think I would rather have the crook Rangle then the next in line Stark who is a raving lunatic.
“Boot his dumb @$$ out ping”
“between $1,028,024 and $2,495,000”
Trying to imagine me telling the IRS I am worth “between $1,028,024 and $2,495,000” and not spending a LOT of time in an orange jump suit...
The post is just picking on Rangel because he is black.
Every time I see him, I cringe.
Yeah, they had three MORE articles, count e’m three, in today’s paper, excoriating Bob McDonnell.
” Rangel must step aside as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee”
Lol. - How about “Should resign from Congress pending his upcoming trial which could land him in Federal prison?”
It is also being reported that he has given campaign funds to three Democrat members of the Ethics Committee. Nothing like buying your friendship
The man who said in 2006 he would resign if the Democrats did not take the majority and make him chair of Ways and Means. Now you can resign in disgrace, Charlie, how’s that?
I don’t think the Democratic Party really cares. They are all crooks from the top down. It amazes me that the good ones don’t want to distance themselves from the rest. If they have any inclination of getting re-elected, they need to pull back from these crooks and get rid of them. I believe that if they don’t do this, they will loose the next election so big it will take 50 years for them to ever come back. I think they have already lost the White House.
Here, here!!!
Waiting for some enterprising reporter to look more closely into each and every Congress-critter’s financial affairs.
On 165,000/yr salary no less.
As a Democrat he’s exempt, the law only applies to Republicans.
