In I Chronicles 13: 1-3 we read, "And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader. And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us: And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul."
The word in verse one which we read as "leader" is actually the Hebrew word, nagid, which denotes a high ranking leader, be it in the civil, military or religious realm. The word only appears two other times in the Hebrew portion of the Bible, once in the preceding chapter and once in Isaiah 55.
What I find interesting is that the two references in I Chronicles serve to demonstrate how the highest leaders of the land all looked to David as a their superior leader and the passage in Isaiah makes reference to him, as an indication of how God will deal with His people.
Undoubtedly this is tied to the fact that David was, according to God, a man after His own heart. How terribly we need a man like David in Washington today, a man who can be a civil, military and, yes, even a religious leader.
Earlier this week, a friend of mine referred me to a website and asked that I consider backing a young, up and coming Indiana politician who has his eyes set on Capitol Hill and a seat in the House of Representatives. I agreed to check it out and, to my surprise, I found a refreshingly Christian outlook, from a Hoosier who claims he wants to help put America back on the right track.
Mr. Travis Hankins claims that he is "A Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order." I like this, as it echoes my own belief that we must place God first in everything, lest we end up in the sort of mess in which the nation now finds itself.
However, I cannot vote for him.
He is adamantly against socialized healthcare and just as firmly against the surrendering of any portion of our national sovereignty to the United Nations or any other international alliance. He has pledged that, if elected, he will fight for a free market healthcare system, a rejection of the Law of Sea Treaty which would give the U.N. authority over U.S. waters and waterways, and push for a complete restructuring of the United Nations.
Still, I cannot vote for him.
He wants to take the bureaucracy out of the militarys chain-of-command and allow our soldiers and their commanders to win the war in Iraq and Afghanistan once and for all. Like me wants to see the nations military resources brought home and returned to the purpose of defending our nation, rather than nation building in foreign lands.
But I cannot vote for him.
He wants to close off our southern border completely, enforce all of the standing illegal immigration laws and end the current game of catch and release. He even wants to make English the countrys official language.
Yet I cannot vote for him.
He is an avid supporter of the second amendment. He promises never to vote for a law that would restrict the right of citizens to bare arms.
I wish that I could vote for him.
He wants to reign in the activist judges at the various levels of the Judicial System. Like me, he says they have been allowed to make law for far too long.
Still, I cannot vote for him.
He is firmly against any definition of marriage which extends beyond the biblical one of one man and one woman joined for life as one flesh. In addition, he believes that all human life is sacred and that any government backing of programs which might lead to abortion should be abolished.
It is just too bad that I cannot vote for him.
He says he would push for the devolution of the Department of Education and the abolishment of the National Education Association, placing the primary responsibility for choices in the education of children back into the hands of their parents and local school officials. Like me, he is also an avid proponent of home schooling and would push to ensure that the government stays clear of encroachment upon parents God-given responsibility to educate their children.
If only I could vote for him.
He is against the current practice of awarding the largest amount of agricultural subsidies to only ten percent of the nations farmers. Under this system, only very large corporate farms receive sufficient assistance and small, family owned farms are doomed to failure, a situation which Mr. Hankins is committed to reversing.
I would really like to say that I am going to vote for him.
Mr. Hankins is committed to removing the Federal Government completely form the economic growth game. He would push for legislation which would place the responsibility of job creation back in the hands of local businesses, stop all tax payer funded bailouts of large corporations whose board members are guilty of mismanagement, and even abolish the Internal Revenue Service.
Now I really wish I could vote for him.
He is in favor of term limits and has pledged to fight for a limit of three terms for members of the House of Representatives. He has even pledged that, if he fails to get this law passed, he will retire from being a representative after just three terms.
I wish I could vote for him.
He has pledged that he will never vote to raid the so-called Social Security Trust Fund. He has also vowed to vote against any and all "pork projects and to never secure an earmark.
I sure would like to vote for him.
All of these things he says he will do and with all of them I fully agree. It would seem that I could not have created a more perfect candidate, nor developed a more solid platform myself.
But, unfortunately, I cannot vote for him.
Why, you may be asking, can I not throw myself whole heartedly behind this candidate? After all, we seem to agree on every single issue which I believe is important.
Frankly, I cannot vote for Mr. Hankins, because I live about five miles too far west to do so. You see, I live in Indianas 8th Congressional Voting District and he is running for election in the 9th District.
Were he running in the 8th District, or were I living in the 9th, then he could most certainly count on my vote. If anyone from the 8th District will run for Congress on the same platform as Mr. Hankins and can convince me of their sincerity, I will pledge my support to the same.
In fact, every politician in the Evansville area ought to take a lesson from him. He is exactly the type of man whom Bible believing men and women should search out as our nagid, our "leaders in every area."
I believe that Travis Hankins is a modern day David, on his way to strike down the Goliaths of corruption in Washington whom others have been too afraid to face. I believe that he has the heart to bring home the ark of our national heritage in the Lord.
If anyone wants to know more about Mr. Hankins, his highly biblical positions, his campaign and even his personal Christian testimony, I would encourage you to visit his website: www.travishankins.com.
Oh, and should he eventually feel called by God to move on, beyond Congress, and seek the highest office of the land, I would absolutely back him in his quest.
Then, at last, I could finally vote for him.
Ping for later.
Our Faith as a nation grants us Freedom(the freedom to believe or not believe, the freedom to worship or not worship)...Our rights and Freedoms come from God, not man and not government...
We need men elected to CONGRESS who will protect the Constitution...this is why we have thrived as a nation...
God has very little to do with government.
God has everything to do with ones spiritual, personal path.
As a lover of freedom, this post perfectly illustrates the
falsity of emotion in relation to seeking saintly perfection in a politician.
Something, BTW that the Obama supporters seem to have found.
I hope genuine Christians find their savior, but NEVER in a politician. That makes one vulnerable to rogues like Obama.
That can make one worse than the Obamaphiles. We deserve better.
Just think, if we had 219 men and/or women like him in the House today, along with a 60 seat majority in the Senate, OH!bama could be reigned in and the US could be saved from his Marxist agenda.
Now back to reality, and unfortunately to OH!bama and his freakazoid collaborators in Congress who are busily preparing to dismantle the world's best health care system and make it over into a copy of the disastrous UK and Canadian systems.
Thats actually sinful.
As I read American history, it wasn't until we started banning God, the bible, and Christianity from the public square that the US began the presently ongoing long slow slide into Marxist, atheistic, semi-slavery that OH!bama and his Godless cohorts are working 24/7 to accelerate to warp speed.
My point was looking for a sainthood in a politician makes one as vulnerable to emotional saviour foolishness as an Obamaphile is.
And thats it.
Now go pound someone else and leave me alone.
Bump
ACORN et al. don't seem to have that problem with their favoured candidates.
Heck ... they don't even let death interfere with their voting.
I would tend to agree with you were the central government to limit itself to building lighthouses and protecting us from the British navy. Unfortunately, the government encroaches into every aspect, including spritual aspects, of our lives.
What an ignorant thing to say.
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." --October 11, 1798 John Adams "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net.
True for Libertarians, not Christians, take your drivel to a thread that supports your flawed notion of Conservatism.
Where on this forum expect any man to have the perfection of God, all that was described here is to expect a man to honer the principles of Judeo Christian ethics, that 98% of our founding fathers took for granted in honorable men.
When the people lose their virtue, they need a stern, strong master to keep them in line. Welcome to the post-Christian USSA.
