Viral Web site mocks Wal-Mart customers
CNN.com ^ | September 3, 2009 | Doug Gross

(CNN) -- It's a blog where people post, and make fun of, pictures of out-of-shape, poorly dressed and otherwise awkward people shopping at Wal-Mart.

And, in less than a month, with no marketing to speak of, it's become the toast of the Internet.

"People of Wal-Mart," a gag started by two 20-something brothers and their buddy to share crazy pictures with their friends, has gone viral. Promoted largely on sites like Digg and Funny or Die -- and linked ad nauseam on Facebook and Twitter -- the site picked up enough traffic to crash its servers on Wednesday.

"I'm still baffled -- I really am," said Andrew Kipple, 23, one of the creators of the site, who said his team was frantically working Wednesday to add enough server space to handle the surge in traffic.

Photos on the site, sent in by viewers all over the United States, frequently feature overweight people wearing tight clothes, bizarre hairstyles (with versions of the short-in-front, long-in-back "mullet" leading the pack) and fashion crimes ranging from furry leg warmers to miniskirts that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination.

There's a guy enjoying a can of beer outside a Wal-Mart, a guy dressed as Captain America and another guy with a goat. Yes, a live goat.

It ain't Wal-Mart.
It's America.

Technically, I invented this nearly a decade ago.
I call it “Wal-Mart Safari”.

You go to the camera section and get yourself a 35mm disposable camera.

Spend an hour or two walking around, snapping pics of the fauna and flora.

Then, turn in the camera for one-hour developing.

Voila!
Keepsakes of your adventure!

It’s a ton of fun when played with a group.

Self-hatred is a manifestation of the liberal mental disorder.

I know it’s funny, and “walmart safari” sounds *really* funny too. It’s always fun to point out people not as cool as you. The irony is this, when your daughter can’t fix the flat, when a cop is losing a fight along the side of the road, etc,,,these are *precisely* the people who will stop to help.

The cool people who think this is funny ,,they’re the ones who cruise right on by.

This website is one of the funniest things I have seen in long time. While I agree that fashion suffers everywhere it does seem like Wally World is a giant runway for the newest trends no matter how bad they are.

I laughed at this as much as I did at mulletjunky.com. I hope they get a bigger server.

Do they really want to go down this road?

I mean, really.

Hillary.

Michelle Obama.

Nancy Pelosi.

Most of San Franciso.

Code Pink.

Do they really want to start making fun of groups of people that look silly in public?

“Denial” isn’t a river in Egypt.

Wal-Mart is just a sectional slice of America.
Love it or hate it.

I don’t try to judge a book by the cover and this website is not making fun of the average Walmart shopper. Don’t be near a beverage when you look at this because you will see some dreadful fashion.

The tall gal with the red pompoms on her feet (?) I saw last night made me wake up the baby laughing.

I won’t bother clicking on it since I enjoy shopping at Walmart just as much as 90% of America.

I parked right behind jeep with a buck tied to the spare tire at walmart. Tongue was hanging out and a bit covered in blood. I thought it a cool thing but Im sure others would consider it “walmart mentality”

Won’t be so funny if someone recognizes themselves in their photos and decides to sue.

Yes.
Those of us that wear shirts in public, cover our guts, or wear skirts that cover our asses are the one who’ll let you down.

Got it.

People are funny.
Deal with it.
