Japan's new First Lady Miyuki Hatoyama: 'I went to Venus in a UFO' (loopy Japanese to the stage)

Japan's new First Lady Miyuki Hatoyama: 'I went to Venus in a UFO'

Richard Lloyd Parry in Tokyo

Japan’s new Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama, faces formidable foreign policy challenges in dealing with an expansionist China, a nuclear armed North Korea and a sinister Russia. But he need have no concerns about establishing friendly relations with the planet Venus — his own wife is a friend of the Venusians, having travelled there in a UFO in the 1970s.

The distinctions of 66-year-old Miyuki Hatoyama do not end there. As well a being a musical actress, cookery writer, clothesmaker and television personality, she is also a friend of the actor Tom Cruise, whom she knew in a past life when he was temporarily incarnated as a Japanese. She would be regarded as bit of a fruitcake anywhere in the world — in Japan’s staid political culture, she is unique.

To his credit, Mr Hatoyama, who will formally become Prime Minister in a fortnight’s time after a landslide election victory last Sunday, does not appear in the least embarrassed by his wife’s eccentricities, and nor do his fellow citizens. She falls into the category of public figure known as “tarento”, or “talent” — televisual artists or entertainers who are expected and encouraged to be more unpredictable, flamboyant, and vividly coloured than the rest of us.

All warm and fuzzy... loopy. I am sure Minshuto has this type of folks. Well, LDP, as it stands now, has too many 'Bakka Juniors,' sons and daughters of old time LDP big wigs. Inept, and hapless.

However, if Minshuto cannot show beyond neophyte charm (a la Obama) and loopy crews, their political fortune may not go far.

So it all boils down to how Ozawa Ichiro does. He commands some 100~140 elected legislators, including many real rookies. Well, if he and PM Hatoyama are falling out, Minshuto will go down fast.

I am interested in how Ozawa will implement his vision of 'Normal Japan.' Would Japan become a country with normal military force, not hampered by Peace Constitution, and no protracted obsession with whitewash of the past (during militarist Japan.)

Everything I’ve read about this guy makes it clear he is going to bankrupt Japan yet further with a double-helping of the pump-priming poison that got them there in the first place.

If she was American, no doubt she would now be serving in the Obama administration.

Well, they were Bay Area types back in 1970, touring around the US in a beat up rental car, so does that answer your question?

“I suspect the women was a hippie back in 60’s.”

Yeah, same as our former first lady Hillary - who I believe acknowledged channeling with Eleanor Roosevelt...

Far better a loopy first lady than she of the evil stare, Michelle.
That look Michelle gave the first lady of France still gives me the chills.

As First ladies go, please. I would far rather gave sweet lovable and loopy over outright evil any day.
