A Belgian national and resident of France, suspected of international arms dealing for decades, was arrested on charges alleging that he conspired to illegally export F-5 fighter jet engines and parts from the United States to Iran, the U.S. Justice Department stated. Jacques Monsieur was arraigned Wednesday in a U.S. federal court in Mobile, Alabama.

Monsieur, 56, and co-defendant Dara Fotouhi, 54, an Iranian national currently living in France, were indicted with conspiracy, money laundering, smuggling, as well as violations of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

A Belgian national and resident of France

Who was it who said he'd rather face 10,000 German soldiers than have 100 Frenchmen behind him? Or something to that effect.

I don’t know if F-5 technology is restricted but arms sales and exchanges to Iran are.

Why isn’t U.S. presurring Russia and EU countries to divest from Iran?

and how should the US do this?
As if Russia would stop shipping weapons around the globe
to countries the US will not sell. It´s a big buisness for them. And for the EU Iran is one of the biggest trade partners of the EU so how pressure them? Ask them please stop using their oil?
there is nothing the US can do against this.

Just as I thought...

The J85 engine had a non after-burner variant that was used in the now older Lear Jets. They are trying to phase them out, to noisy. So the question begs, how similar were the internal parts of the civilian CJ 610 to the J85 and were they buying up the CJ 610 parts?

WE'RE still flying that 40 year technology. Specifically the Navy aggressor/adversary squadrons (VFC-111, for instance) which were just "replenished" using F-5s bought back from the Swiss.

Although this hardly seems an occassion for French bashing, non, mon ami?

Forget Russia. France and Germany are Iran’s largest trading partners.

Yes. We’re still flying them. I hope Northrop Grumman is catching some of the scrutiny on this.

My first thoughts were with regards to this story...

http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2009/06/collector_puzzled_over_seizure.html

I know they’re not connected, just some topical similarities...planes, Alabama, the French...

F-5? They still flying that 40 year technology?

The Marine Corps and the Navy both fly the F-5 in the adversary role.
