Vladimir Putin is due in Poland on Tuesday to stand with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and Polish leaders to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the start of the second world war. But this show of unity belies deep divisions about the war, its causes and its consequences. Even today, the debate remains a fraught public issue, which politicians do not leave to historians especially not in eastern Europe.
The arguments centre on the ex-Soviet Unions role in mankinds bloodiest conflict, not least its responsibility for starting the fighting. Mr Putin would go a long way to easing political tensions between Russia and the European Unions eastern members, headed by Poland, if he made some conciliatory remarks. Nobody expects an apology, just a few words showing he understands why Moscows view of the war is not shared by its neighbours. For many Poles, Balts and other east Europeans, Stalin is as big a villain as Hitler. Lithuania was a prime mover in a resolution passed this summer by the parliamentary assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, which called for a Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, echoing an earlier appeal from the European parliament.

Stalin wanted war every bit as much as Hitler.
Stalin killed just as many, if not more than Hitler too. That’s kept pretty quiet though...
I wonder why?

This is where the infamous Molotov/Ribbentrop (Hitler-Stalin Pact) was signed.
Stalin was FDR and the New York Times Big Buddy!
Actually, Stalin was for far more 'deaths by government' than Hitler. Only Mao Tse-tung was a more prolific murderer.
I wonder why?
The phrase "no enemies on the left" pretty much explains it. Look up the names Antonio Gramsci and more recently, Saul Alinsky for a more detailed explanation.
The secret codicils of the Nazi/Soviet Pact empowered Stalin to seize the Baltic states, the eastern half of Poland, western Ukraine and a large chunk of Romania, as well as making a grab for Finland (the Winter War). In return, the USSR supplied Hitler with the grain and oil that fueled the Wehrmacht’s conquest of France et al. If that’s not a partnership to start a war I don’t know what is.
It's ok to mass murder, just as long as they are the same race as you.
Exactly! Covering for their own.
I love seeing lefties’ reactions to this stuff when you being it up. Many just laugh and tell you that you’re crazy.
Everyone knows the Hell Hitler unleashed though.
Hitler and Stalin were two sides of the same coin. Evil incarnate.
