Obama is Losing His Base
Jewish World Review ^ | September 1, 2009 | Dick Morris & Eileen McGann

Posted on 09/02/2009 5:11:21 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The polls this week are a disaster for Barack Obama. Scott Rasmussen has his approval dropping to 45 percent, after several weeks at 49 percent. John Zogby has it even lower — at 42 percent.

Beneath the superficial data lies even worse news for the president. Not only is he losing support, but he is losing his political base. Young people — under 30 — long a key element of his support, give him no better than break-even ratings with 41 percent approving and 41 percent disapproving of the job he is doing according to Zogby. And only 75 percent of Democrats, who have supported Obama strongly in the past, now approve of the job he is doing.

Zogby reports that this low approval by his fellow partisans represents a slide of more than 10 points over the summer. Even blacks are becoming tepid in their backing for Obama, with only 74 percent approving of the job he is doing (also a drop of more than 10 points). Hispanics, who voted for Obama by a margin of more than 40 points, now break even, 36-36, on their rating of his job in office.

Independents, the key swing group in our politics, now deliver a sharply negative 37-50 verdict on Obama's performance in office, and the elderly also give him negative ratings by 42-51.

Now that Obama, weakened with lower ratings, confronts his party in Congress, he has few good options.

He obviously cannot get 60 votes for his health care proposals in their current form. No Republican will support them, and it is unlikely that moderate Democrats will vote with him.

I hope Dick Morris is right. Republicans should stick to their guns and support a limited health care reform plan that includes tort reform and the ability of individuals to deduct health insurance premiums (similar to the exclusion of employer-provided insurance from taxable income). If the Democrats want a much bigger government role, they should try pass a bill on their own.

Watch MSNBC, Maddow, Schulz and Olbermann. His base is upset over health care reform public option and it is getting worse. They will still vote for him, but not come out in numbers in the 2010 mideterm elections.

I can see Obama sporting a Jackson nose in about 10-years.

Somewhere in America there's a kid waiting for that -- so he can get his parents charged for truancy.

....nah...his base is the Academy, Unions, and the urban masses...plus the same women voters who backed Bill Clinton....and it’s all still there waiting for his beck and call.

He set himself up into a political trap with Healthcare. Everyone to his right opposes his plan and everyone on his left will not be happy with anything short of a British style NHS.

The country is so divided now that it makes one wonder if a President will ever be able to govern from the center and be popular.

I'm glad the independents are coming to their senses, but I'd still like to kick them hard, square in the nuts, for electing this bastard in the first place.

Idiots...

His base is upset over health care reform public option and it is getting worse.

Then some of the disapproval is because he isn't Marxist enough

That is not encouraging

I tune in AirAmerica on the drive into work, because its the only live talk on at 4:30 in the morning. The hard left, the move-on ding-bats, the Kos Kids, are disgusted with Obama. Reasons; backing off single payer, tip toeing around public option, the war in Afghanistan, and bail out money, and on and on. To get these lefties back, Obama needs to make a hard left once again, and every time he does he looses the middle, the less liberal of the party, which probably makes up the larger proportion.

Like a true rookie, Obama has bit off more than he can chew, and burned his political capital way too early. He caused major hurt for himself and his party.

I’m curious as to what happens when Obambi’s true colors start to show (i.e. his birth certificate reveals that he’s not an American citizen, he’s found in contempt of the Constitution, a military coup, a recall vote, etc.)? In the historical aspect of our country, will it show him as Pres__ent with an asterisk, or will he be left out of American history altogether; a gap of a few years existing in our history books?

Something has GOT to give. I still don’t believe that the people of this country would fight and die for our Freedom, but I hope I’m wrong... Lord God, I hope I’m wrong.

“The country is so divided now that it makes one wonder if a President will ever be able to govern from the center and be popular.”

I’ve been thinking that too. But, there is a general disgust with big gov BS, that is what drove the pubbies out of congress.

Somebody needs to run on an HONESTY platform, and really mean it. That will get support even from many who will not agree with details of the agenda.

Bush got backed into a corner over the WMD issue, and “great job Brownie” certainly didn’t help. Other than that I think Bush was perceived of as honest, and I think he’ll be seen more that way as time passes.

Obama, I can barely say he is a liar, he is just a class A BS artist.

But, for once, the people are paying attention to CONGRESS and seeing what a bunch of clowns Pelosi, Reid, Frank, et al are. That can only be for the good, provided they remember next November.
