Worrying about the looming threat of unemployment can be more damaging to a person's health than actually being jobless, according to a U.S. study.
With the United States suffering its worst recession since the depression, researchers set out to look at how job insecurity impacted the health of workers.
"This study provides the strongest evidence to date that persistent job insecurity has a negative impact on worker health," said sociologist Sarah Burgard of the University of Michigan Institute of Social Research. "It may seem surprising that chronically high job insecurity is more strongly linked with health declines than actual job loss or unemployment."

For now, I am doing the things I want to do, along with those things I never had time for.
Then I hope that the Obamaloon is worried about his job security.
And I’m doing all I can to increase that worry.
I've seen this happen a few years ago when we had a minor recession at a place I used to work... some folks were so scared of being laid off... that one guy died of a heart attack from the stress...
I think you are truly one of the lucky ones... you can use the time off to get your thoughts back together and reposition yourself for a new career...
It really depends. I got hit last week, and it was a total surprise. When that happens, it’s obviously WAY worse afterwards. I’m still in a state of shock.
I didn’t love my job so indeed it was a blessing. And I was worried about losing my job, so when it finally happened, I didn’t have anything more to worry about!
Sorry to hear that. It was a shock for me too. I had thought I made it through the worst of the downturn.
What’s the saying?.....”if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”
I think this is true. The ax is going to fall at my office at some point within the next two months. I am having heart palpitations, insomnia, and panic attacks that wake me up in the middle of the night.
I’ve had it both ways. For me, being unable to pay bills is more stressful.
I think it’s debatable. My job was supposed to be eliminated in June...then September...then November...then March ‘10. My boss’ boss now says he thinks it may not be until next June.
It is stressful not knowing how much longer you’re going to have a job or if they will move you to another department (they’ve given my work group no assurances even though the business has stabilized considerably).
But I was out of work during the ‘90-’91 recession and I eventually ran out of money. That was worse. You can’t really enjoy the time off when you have no money to do anything.
So, I’d say the stress of being unemployed was worse for me than being in job jeopardy. I’m really grateful for every day I can just go to the office and do my job while I still have one.
I am worried that being over 50 is going to make finding the next job a lot tougher than 20 years ago.
so you are no longer allowed to lay-off employees because of the negative impact it is having on our national health care system....see how beautifully it all works together?
