Investors bracing for Sept. correction: strategist
Market Watch ^ | 8/31/09

Posted on 08/31/2009 8:01:57 AM PDT by FromLori

After a powerful rally in stocks from the March lows, "investors are wondering if September will live up to its reputation as the month in which the S&P 500 (SPX 1,018, -11.12, -1.08%) posts its worst price performance and frequency of decline," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at Standard & Poor's Equity Research, on Monday. He said investors "may have a reason to fear a setback in September" considering the month's dismal historical performance. "We don't know whether concerns over the upcoming [third-quarter] earnings reporting season will trigger this anticipated digestion of gains, or if further nervousness emanating from the Chinese stock market over the prospects of a slower-than-expected growth in GDP will cause U.S. equities to trim some of its recent advances, but September is as good a month as any in which to suffer a setback," Stovall said. "And while past performance is no guarantee of future results, history hints that September certainly has the reputation."

I scaled back my exposure significantly about a week ago. Nice pick up this year, but I was hit very hard last year and am still down 38% from early last year.

Will The US Follow Shanghai Off The Cliff? China's tail wagged our dog the first time around. Will the same thing happen again? (The hope here is that this is so obvious that it won't happen). Another great chart from Calculated Risk: http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-will-the-us-follow-shanghai-off-the-cliff-2009-8

Powerful stock rally my you know what. The day the stock market went to 9,000 or over; it really should have been -125. Of course; due to some stock manipulations that included substituting 5 stocks we all know to be Obama friends who were doing poorly for 5 stocks doing fairly well being done on the DJB; I don’t think the stock market really made a come back. With the government we have; I am surprised we still have a stock market.

I’m very interested to know how you scaled back your exposure, as I would like to do the same...without getting into too many specifics, can you enlighten me?
Thanks,
David

A few more gold mining stocks via mutual funds, international bond funds, some to money markets to preserve my gains.

Not an expert by any means. I’m limited to what my 401K offers, but the offerings are pretty extensive for a 401k plan.

What do you think? I am with the group that thinks it’s too early to tell as things don’t happen overnight.

The thing is it hasn’t been overnight really it has been building for a while with not only the CRA but the CRE and the Credit Derivatives the problems with the FDIC all told trillions. I think they may be able to dupe enough for a short while but the ponzi scheme is bound to collapse. I am of the better safe then sorry group and am worried about end of Sept./October so have made plans just in case.
