Yep, it's called brush clearing. Last I knew, it was still illegal in CA.

After a devastating fire in Yosemite Valley some years back, the state of California began brush clearance operations in that area with a vengeance. I've driven through Yosemite in the summer, and have seen mile after mile after mile of baled forest litter along the highways.

yeah, but isn't it still illegal for homeowners to take care of it themselves?

I only ask out of ignorance, and the fact that when I found it was illegal, my first reaction was "So What?".

When it comes to obeying a law that's likely unenforceable, and saving my house from burning flat, that's an easy choice.

If you are talking about the Yosemite National Park, state laws don't apply to federal property.
