Gordon Brown was dragged into the centre of the row over the early release of the Lockerbie bomber last night after it emerged that a key decision that could have paved the way for the terrorist to serve his sentence in Libya was approved by Downing Street.
A source close to Jack Straw told The Times that the move to include Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi in a prisoner transfer agreement in 2007 was a government decision and was not made at the sole discretion of the Justice Secretary. It wasnt just Jack who decided this. It was a Government decision. Jack did not act unilaterally.
The row over the early release of the Lockerbie bomber ten days ago shows no sign of abating after the Ministry of Justice indicated yesterday that the decision to include al-Megrahi in a prisoner transfer agreement had been made with the possibility of trade deals with Libya in mind.
The negotiations over a prisoner transfer agreement were part of a wider agreement for the normalisation of relations with Libya as part of bringing them into the international community, he said.

Yes. But another way to look at it is that if this knocks the Labor Party out of power and the conservatives take over, then those victims didn’t die for nothing. That’s about the best face I can put on it. Another beneficial by-product is that it makes ostammer look like a totally impotent candyass.
Crocodile tears for public consumption.
It's the release of the terrorists that count. Ask Hillary.

I posted last week that it was all about oil. As always...follow the money.
Isn’t there a spider that has the same red/black marking? The name escapes me right now ;)
There seems to be a lot of Red attached to The Obammunist.

I still keep imagining that the 230 Nigerians were a major, if secret, factor. If they were not, I agree with your assessment.

Ronald Reagan would have never let the SOB’s plane land. Would have forced it down in Tel Aviv, or shot it down into the Med.
Out! Out! Out!
Or even better. Al-Megrahi would have been inside a C-130 instead of a Boeing or Airbus and kicked out through the ramp with a tangled parachute 30000 feet over the Med.
I want to know if the US gov’t was complicit in this deal in any way.
very very likely
My thinking runs this way, FWIW: That we quite probably did know about the deal. And that if we did indeed know about it, there was no way we'd keep quiet and let the Brits do the deal without cutting us in on it.
I want to be wrong about that. I'd be delighted to serve myself up a heaping helping of crow.
But I want to know the answer to that. And I don't think anyone's asking about what we knew and when we knew it.
And note to Chuck Schumer: If you suddenly shut your lap about this after calling for sanctions on the Brits, well, we’ll all know why, won’t we...
shut your yap....
If the admin was involved the chance the US media would care is zero.
Brian on FNFs said there's no way Great Britain would make this deal without first consulting with the Obama administration knowing how many Americans died in that bombing. Sounds like they are going to keep on top of this. Follow the oil.
Note to the UK: If our gov’t aided and abetted yours, feel free not to take the rap on your own.
I have a very, very bad feeling....
