BAINBRIDGE, Ind. — Republican Mitch Daniels has repeatedly insisted that his 2008 run for a second term as Indiana's governor was his last election and that he's not interested in the "savagery" of a national campaign.
But like it or not, Daniels' name is being dropped in conservative GOP circles as someone to watch in 2012. Many say Daniels is just what the battered GOP needs, a blend of conservative values, cool demeanor and fiscal discipline.
"Mitch has been steady to the cause, he's stayed principled," said Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee. "The nation is going to recognize him."
Some political observers say Daniels is as good a bet as any for a national party reeling from Democrats' solid victory last year and the recent stumbles of former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and two other rising GOP stars — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Nevada Sen. John Ensign.

Mitch Daniels has been a successful Governor in a state that voted for Obama (albeit very narrowly with some suspicions about its accuracy). It’s natural that Daniels would be mentioned.

What are they talking about? She has won EVERY BS ethics complaint against her. She’s like 18-0. Did I miss something? Seriously, I really want to know-even if its from DU or Huffington or MSNBC...what “stumble” could they possibly be talking about?????????

charges against her were found to be without cause?
Was that when her facebook page reached a million viewers?
Was that when she spanked the “Death Panels” and influenced
the health care bill as a common citizen?

Mitch Daniels is a backup candidate for many Romney supporters should Mitt not run. I believe if Daniels decides to run, then Mitt won’t run but instead declare Daniels to be “My Man Mitch”.

A lot of the things Daniels did during his first term, were trival but did contribute to his low inital approval ratings. Things like changing daylight savings time or outsourcing the tollway. However Daniels did overcome the low approval ratings to win re-election in a landslide. Daniels is a savvy politican to do that. I am willing to give him a chance.
More like the democrat he followed left the state in horrible state. Mitch tightened the belt....which at first was resisted....and have us back in the black. He got 80% of the vote last time...OTOH Jill Long is a bit of a ditse....No comparison to Becky Skillman his running partner. Dem’s made a mistake thinking that any woman would balance the gender vote....Guess they thought wrong.

If you want to save health care, let’s listen to our doctors. There should be no health care reform without legal reform. There can be no true health care reform without legal reform.

I actually like Daniels, and I think he has some aspects that could help win a national election. He is a strongly popular Midwesterner, as well as a Governor, not a Legislator.
I like Palin as well, but I dont think she will be president. I think we need to lay off on some of the hero worship, or else were gonna become like the Kos kids with Obama. How many people really liked Sanford before his infidelity? Quite a bit. Heroes can fall, and that can include Palin and Daniels. I think we should pay attention to what people do and keep our options open.
No, Daniels has not raised taxes. He has cut the budget in some places, and made the state government run much more efficiently in others. He has been an excellent governor, IMO.
Outsourcing the Tollway has turned out to be an astoundingly good deal for the state (and a bad deal for MIG-Cintra). There was an article in Barron’s about it a few months ago. In essence, Daniels consummated the deal at the very top of the private infrastructure bubble of a few years ago, and this has contributed to the state having much healthier finances than other states.
Aw yes, an AP article. They will pick out the least of those who are conservative and who could beat Obama.
Daniels may be fine in his position in Ind.
but could never draw the crowds or get out the vote
nation wide.
