Kennedy would not have jumped ship.

I say it would have been McGovern that cause him to jump.It would have been Bobby had they not been brothers.

When JFK said “ask not what your country can do for you-—ask what you can do for your country” certainly separates him from todays leftist tax and spend democrates who use your tax dollars to buy votes from the free loaders.

I agree with Secret Agent Man. He would be a Blue Dog.

The Democrats of the 60’s have nothing to do with this time. Most of them (Dean Rusk, Dean Acheson) were not weak in National Security matters.

As Henry “Scoop” Jackson said :

“I’m not a hawk or a dove. I just don’t want my country to be a pigeon.”

“If you believe in the cause of freedom, then proclaim it, live it and protect it, for humanity’s future depends on it.”

“The richest country in the world can afford whatever it needs for defense.” (1960, campaigning for Kennedy)

Richard Perle, as you probably know, was a close friend of Scoop.

Several years ago (early 90’s) Rush Limbaugh played a tape of a JFK speech on economics.

His economic principles were identical to those of Reagan.

Well...when it comes to Afganistan Obama isn’t “weak” either. He’s more pro-war on that issue than Bush and on Iraq is merely carrying out the SOFA negotiated by Bush.

I think you are right. McGovern was the only genuine antiwar candidate that the Democrats ever ran. JFK would not have liked him.

There is no such thing as “antiwar”, only those who think we fight for the wrong side.

I hold no brief for McGovern (though he is now very free market compared to most in his party) but when did he propose we “fight” for the other side? Specifics please.

We'll certainly never know for sure but one thing you *cannot* say about JFK was that he was a coward or had any use for cowards. And McGovern was, perhaps, the first true coward to get the RAT nomination. Not the last, mind you....

Coward? On what basis do you make that charge? By all accounts, McGovern had a stellar record as a bomber pilot during WWII and, unlike JFK, did not lose the vessel he commanded through incompetence!

Your question proves that you either aren't old enough to remember him or weren't paying attention back then.

He is not so pro-war as some people think on the Afghanistan issue. He is just following the so-called consensus about the “Right War”.

Congrats! You have just won the Bill Clinton award for evasiveness. In other words, you don't have any evidence other than the fact that you disagree with McGovern on the issues.

That consensus died long ago. A majority of his party now think that the war was a mistake. True, they won't actually do anything but that's what they say.

I believe if JFK had lived, he would morph into an uber-liberal just Ted Kennedy. Case in point, Ted Kennedy was once strongly pro-life. In 1971, Ted Kennedy denounced abortion as a human rights violation. Over time, he ditched his pro-life to gain favor from the left wing groups. I believe JFK would pander to Kos and Moveon today.

Yep! JFK's hawkishness wrt the Soviets, hornyness for their secret agents, and belief in capitalism were the reasons the demoncrats Fabian/Gramscian/LBJ wing had him iced...IMHO

Wrong...absolutely wrong.JFK was,IMO,the last prominent RAT who was worthy of any real respect from genuine Americans.Yes,he was a deeply flawed individual in his private life but as a leader he did deserve respect.

If you need a reminder of what I mean, check out the link provided below. And as you're watching, compare this speech to the one made by Hussein in the very same place about a year ago and then tell me who's as dumb as a post.
