Hojjatoleslam Sadegh Larijani, the new chief of the judiciary, has fired Saeed Mortazavi, the notorious Prosecutor General of Tehran and of the Revolutionary Court. Larijani has appointed Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi to replace him.
Mortazavi was responsible for the arrest and torture of many journalists, young bloggers, human rights advocates, political activists and reformist leaders. He was behind the closure of more than 200 newspapers, weeklies, and monthlies.
Mortazavi has been implicated in the death of Dr. Zahra Kazemi, the Iranian-Canadian photojournalist who was killed while in custody. She was taking photos of the notorious Evin prison when arrested. The attorneys for her family, Abdolfattah Soltani and Shirin Ebadi, have stated that there were three fractures in Dr. Kazemis skull, her body was bruised in many places, and there were indications that she might have been raped.
I'm not familiar with Dolatabadi, who "was the justice chief in the western province of Khuzestan."

Truly, a very radical view! (sarc)

Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani has formed a panel to supervise the proceeding of cases related to the country's post-election violence.
Iran's Prosecutor General Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, deputy Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raeesi and Judiciary adviser Ali Khalafi were named on Saturday as members of the panel.
The panel is formed “out of the necessity for just, firm and speedy review of the cases linked to the unrest that followed the epic presidential election, the violence at Tehran University's dormitory and the issue of Kahrizak detention center,” Larijani said.
The Judiciary chief added that the perpetuators must be brought to justice regardless of their rank or standing.
The panel will monitor all the investigations and court proceedings to ensure that the defendants’ rights are reserved and that they are treated properly. The panel will report directly to the Judiciary chief.

Will they blame everything on Mortazavi, and then everything will be fine...
Sounds nice....but Larijani is a member of the Guardian Council and did allow the hearings against the protestors to continue since his appointment 2 wks ago (hearings without the the defendents’ lawyers present), so I’m not expecting much.
Khamenei may have appointed him because Larijani was born in Najaf, and Khamenei has been getting an earful from Sistani.
They are trying to find scapegoats.
I can’t find any English language confirmation, but there are reports in Farsi of Mortazavi being appointed national deputy prosecutor.

Chapter 3
The Revolutionist: Mohsen Sazegara Of Iran
I don’t trust Sazegara
“I dont trust Sazegara”
?
Remember people do change.
Final paragraph of the chapter in question...
“In America Shahab asked him one day: “Daddy, suppose you succeed. What next?” Mohsen replied: “I don’t know, but I think overturning two regimes is enough for one lifetime.”

PS Read the book highly recomended
At the sametime very depressing (in what they people are facing), and very uplifting (that they have the courage to do what they are doing.
Thanks I’ll check it out.
Sazegara may have truly changed. I just don’t quite trust him yet. We’ll see.
