Some would go farther and say that the memorandum from Victor Chebrikov, the top man at the KGB that was addressed to Yuri Andropov, the top man in the entire USSR, outlining a secret proposal made by Senator Ted Kennedy to the Soviets to help them "understand Reagan" in return for their help in making him president, constitutes treason.
It's not a word to throw around lightly and the reason I refrain from using it is because I am unsure Kennedy's actions meet the definition. Kennedy was not in direct contact with Andropov, using his good friend John Tunney, former senator from California, as a messenger boy to deliver the proposal to the Soviets. And he wasn't proposing to betray any secrets.
At the time this memo was first released (1992), it was completely ignored by the American press. But I vividly recall reading about it when Paul Kengor published his book The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism. There was a brief firestorm on the internet with Kennedy supporters pointing out that it was possible that Tunney - a notorious loose cannon - could have concocted the whole thing without Kennedy's knowledge.
Kennedy office issued a statement saying that the interpretation of the memo was "way off the mark," but didn't deny its authenticity.

His father was ready to throw in the towel for England when he was Ambassador to the Court of St. James. He thought Hitler was on the winning side of history.
It amazes me how these closet communists get to stay in the closet.
If he got away with leaving a young lass to die, he can get away with everything on earth.
I’m curious about the stupidity of the Mass voter; will they elect another Kennedy or similar freak? Will Barney Frank take his place?
29 August 2009, the first Traitor buried in Arlington National Cemetery. I would love to hear the true patriots buried on that hallowed hill ask him what are you doing here? This is no place for traitors or cowards. Truly a sad, sad day.
Didn’t Jimma Carter do the same thing with Saudia Arabia?
The MSM won’t let anything get between them and their fawning.
“Im curious about the stupidity of the Mass voter; will they elect another Kennedy or similar freak? Will Barney Frank take his place?”
You had to have grown up in or near Boston as I did, to appreciate the mindset there...the obtuseness...the fact that a Bostonian is only happy when he is unhappy. With few exceptions, they are the most unpleasant, unhappy people I have ever met, and I have been all over the world.
You heartless people just don't UNDERSTAND that ol' Uncle Teddy was just trying to save us from the mean Russkies and the dim-bulb Reagan! If only you would listen and learn from the "Lion of the Senate"...
Now come together, and let's pass this Health Care For All™ in Teddy's wonderful memory!

If there’s a God in heaven, Ted didn’t get away with anything. If there’s not, well...then I guess it doesn’t really matter anyway.

As power becomes centralized, the “palace” struggles become intense. Ministers collude with foreigners to gain power, promising rewards; there are “accidents,” betrayals and great riches for the moment. Our elected representatvices at every level in every state have in great number succumed to historical patterns of corruption and dishonesty. The manipulation of the people and the lies are common throughout the ages. The founders had hoped an educated population could prevent the repetition. But, everybody forgot.

no...He may have tried (IIRC) with Soviets....Brenev.

I challenge Republicans to take this treason to the nets. Stop this praise parade. The man was a repulsive enemy of America. Say so!
Ted went to heaven to stand before our Lord. Well almost. Just as a sacred haze begun to clear, Ted was surprised to see a young Mary Jo Kopechne standing in front of him. She hadn't aged a day since he left her just a few feet below the water's surface. She asked him: "Know any good Chappaquiddick jokes", and pulled a lever and a trap door opened under Ted's feet, as he fell down, down, down to his proper fate.
(Mark Steyn inspired a new tagline for me)
Ted Kennedy went a different route. He got kitted out with a neck brace and went on TV and announced the invention of the Kennedy curse, a concept that yoked him to his murdered brothers as a fellow victim and not, as Mary Jo perhaps realized in those final hours, the perpetrator. He dared us to call his bluff, and, when we didnt, he made all of us complicit in what hed done. We are all prey to human frailty, but few of us get to inflict ours on an entire nation
The senators actions in the hours and days after emerging from that pond tell us something ugly about Kennedy the man. That he got away with it tells us something ugly about American public life.
