In a breaking story, The Louisiana Weekly and Bayoubuzz.com have learned that the hero of Hurricane recovery, General Russell Honore is seriously considering entering the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate seat against incumbent David Vitter. Honore, a Republican since the Reagan Administration and a registered Louisiana voter from his Zachary home, has spoken to friends and supporters in the last two weeks signaling that he is, according to one, "more than 50% sure that he will run."
The news comes mere hours after Third District Congressman Charlie Melancon announced his firm intention to be the Democratic challenger to David Vitter in the fall of 2010. Melancon, who represents the critical swing areas of Central Acadiana--a region known for crowing statewide candidates--has already proven a serious obstacle for the incumbent Senator to keep his job. Even if Vitter should emerge victorious from the closed Republican primary, a bruising fight against Honore could leave the Senator financially and visibly weakened before the onslaught of a Moderate Democrat like Melancon--one of the leaders of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Caucus in the House.
While polls show Vitter as the clear favorite in both the primary and the general election, one very senior Louisiana Republican predicted that if Honore runs, "He wins." As that GOP party elder further explained to the www.louisianaweekly.com and Bayoubuzz on the promise of confidentiality, "All he has to say is 'Stuck on Stupid', and Vitter is toast."
Military voters, who constitute a plurality of the Republican electorate, will flock to Honore, and the party leader in question also believes that the General's race will matter to primary voters less than his social stands. Honore admitted through aides to the Weekly that he is "pro-life and pro-family".

While I don’t applaude using the services of call girls, I believe Vitter has an ACU rating of 93%.
I would be inclined to stick with a proven conservative with that kind of voting record unless Honore could prove he is even more conservative than that.
I’ve had it with conservatives supporting candidates when they don’t know where they stand (like many on this board who supported Colin Powell and Condeleeza Rice without knowing anything about their positions on the issues of the day).
Yea, I know the incident.
Just a bit of background. I was without TV for most of Katrina so everything I had I got from the radio.
As a famous sheriff once said, “You sounded taller on the radio.”
I’ve been in love with the man ever since he told the news clowns they were “stuck on stupid”. I’ll send money.
Also, He believes people should first be responsible for themselves, as he said after Katrina:
" Why are we sending people there to issue them ice and water? We should be empowering people to act locally. The key to hurricane preparation is family preparation. If families are prepared, we lose fewer lives."

Cajuns have trouble trusting you too. Particularly when you don’t seem to know Cajun History. They were French when France knew how to do more than surrender. They broke ties with the French and then the Brits and then the Americans over betrayal. They have reason not to think that much of Le American, but duty and honor is something they understand. Honore, would not be a step down from Vitter in any way and his commitment to the truth would be refreshing.
I noticed that,too.
He was the only one from LA that made any sense during the spectacle.
“Ive had it with voting for someone just because of their voting record, despite how despicable a person they are. Its they same argument people used for Bill Clinton....”
Support Gen. Honore if you like. If I were to find out he will vote against ObamaCare, Cap and Tax, hate crime legislation, illegal alien amnesty, Porkulus II, judges like Sotomayor, etc., etc., and had at least as good of a conservative voting record as Vitter, I’d support him too.
But I would not support him if I found out he was a McLame or Grahamnesty clone just to get back at Vitter for his infidelity.
BTW, what are Honore’s positions on these and other current issues?
My first reaction is to swoon and say YEAH! But that’s just based on the way he performed during Katrina.
What do you and other locals think of him?
wrt “based on the way he performed during Katrina.”
don’t be too quick. Then MG Caldwell, CG of the 82d, did most of the Title 10 good works. LTG (ret) Honore just ran around screaming w/o purpose. It made for good TV, but accomplished very little.
Anyone here from the USS Iwo Jima remember the CO almost kicking him off the ship?
This is great news. I didn’t even know that Honore was a Republican. Even better that he is pro-life! Certainly better than ole Colon Powell.
I wonder what Moon Griffon thinks about this? He is a local Louisiana true-conservative talk show host. I think he may still support Vitter. But I think that if Honore wins he is a shoe -in. He would get the Republican vote and at least 40% of the black vote. Mary Landrieu better be glad she isn’t up for re-election against him.
That first stone always stings the most.
Vitter has been exemplary in his conservative voting. But you want to risk that because he sinned. Look to the cross, only he can save.
Wasn’t a porn star lady going to be running against Vitter too?
I hope she still does, she would be a great spoiler to help Honore.
Being a bit droll, I figger.
The Cajuns have their own distinct culture that is related to the land that they settled in America.
Go to an Italian-American club during the World Cup. You have 3rd and 4th generation Italian Americans waving Italian flags rooting for Italy. Then go to a French-American club during the World Cup. They couldn't give a crap about the team from France.
You’re thinking of Stormy Daniels, and she’s thinking of running, but hasn’t decided what party she’ll be a member of.
I took her as wanting to be an indy.
