Mark Steyn: Things only a Kennedy could get away with

Mark Steyn: Things only a Kennedy could get away with And by not calling his bluff on Chappaquiddick, Americans became complicit in it.

We are enjoined not to speak ill of the dead. But, when an entire nation – or, at any rate, its "mainstream" media culture – declines to speak the truth about the dead, we are certainly entitled to speak ill of such false eulogists. In its coverage of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's passing, America's TV networks are creepily reminiscent of those plays Sam Shepard used to write about some dysfunctional inbred hardscrabble Appalachian household where there's a baby buried in the backyard but everyone agreed years ago never to mention it.

In this case, the unmentionable corpse is Mary Jo Kopechne, 1940-1969. If you have to bring up the, ah, circumstances of that year of decease, keep it general, keep it vague. As Kennedy flack Ted Sorensen put it in Time magazine:

And I'm sick of hearing he was supposed to be some "Lion of the Senate."

More like "Lyin' in the Senate."

I’d rather see the Michael Jackson adulations. At least they are more honest, LOL.

Melissa Lafsky mused on what Mary Jo "would have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history … Who knows – maybe she'd feel it was worth it."

I can't believe that quote. Unreal.

"We conservatives are classy and respectful;..."

There's a fine line between "classy" and just being a candy-ass; Pubbies in Congress crossed that line several decades back.

I have!

Besides which, the dawns have been rosier, the sunsets cleaner!
It's as though Earth herself is feeling younger and more alive, as if rid of a pox!

Hmmm. Lets see...

1. Murder

2. Rape

3. Breaking of Massachusetts fireworks laws

4. Adultery

5. I could go on, but it's late, and I'm tired.

It’s a national disgrace that Ted Kennedy is to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. I say dig up his bloated carcass and drag him to Chappaquiddick Island. No casket necessary, just chuck him down an outhouse hole and place a plaque above it: “Here lies the rotting corpse of Ted Kennedy: coward and traitor!”

I disagree. Chappaquiddick was the problem. Kennedy's behavior that day showed him to be either guilty of murder or, at the very least, negligent homicide. He never was brought to the bar in a human tribunal to answer for that event.

May God have mercy on his soul.

I've been gone all weekend and so I (thankfully) missed any of the libturd coverage of the killer Ted Kennedy.

I agree with your first paragraph, but I fail to understand why so many FReepers are praying for God to have mercy on this wretched, unrepentent, remorseless piece of scum. The Bible says "It is appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgement". Ted Kennedy's opportunity for God's mercy passed the instant his soul departed his body, and now he will face God's wrath & righteous judgement & eternal damnation, not for murder of Mary Jo Kopechne, but for his unbelief and no visible sign or fruit of ever being born again. I do however strongly believe that Mary Jo Kopechne and 55 million aborted babies will haunt Ted Kennedy throughout eternity.

I understand your sentiment. I pondered long and hard (okay, for perhaps two minutes) before writing my last sentence. I was thinking along the lines that he was guilty of gross and heinous crimes and that the only hope for him was in the mercy and forgiveness of God.

Unfortunately for Fat Teddy, by the time I wrote those words, he had already been judged. The game was over. His time had run out. So, if he did not repent and through himself on the mercy of Jesus, and there is no evidence that he did, Fat Teddy’s torment has only just begun.

I agree with everything you wrote.

I’m with you on that. Haven’t heard or seen a thing. My sister was happy to tell me of the crowd at the church, but it brought a little barf up my throat!

That “conservative Lion” is the person John McCain thinks HE was. THat’s why McCain never tired of speaking of Ted Kennedy, cloyingly, parenthetically, as “The Lion of the Senate”, as if hoping it would rebound off Kennedy and stick to him, and someday (sigh) someone, maybe even Kennedy himself, would acknowledge HIM as the Lion of the Senate. For McCain, this was just another example of his being in the grip of The Stockholm Syndrome

Agreed....We all know what Teddy was and Hatch is looking more like a twit each day.

His latest is to jump on the “let’s appoint Teddy’s wife to fill the vacancy” bandwagon. Keep that dynasty going, eh Orrin?

This is a man in serious need of a winning primary opponent.
