Not that I had any great amount of affection for the now-deceased senior Senator from Taxachusetts...I mean, Massachusetts, but I found myself these last few days tuning in on occasion to watch the "grand celebration" of Ted Kennedy's life and achievements. Actually, it wasn't like a person could avoid having to watch something about the guy, given the hagiographic orgy of storytelling the mainstream media was indulging in over the fellow.
And because of the canonization going on over Kennedy (I expect Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to rename "ObamaCare" to "KennedyCare" any second now), I was forced to ponder on what his real achievement -- besides proving that a 60s-era Oldsmobile wasn't quite capable enough to fill in for a Navy submarine in an emergency -- has been over the last several decades.
It seems to me to have been -- for all intents and purposes -- the attempted murder of American exceptionalism and all that the concept means, to this day, to a great many of my fellow citizens. Also; I'm really not talking about all the surface fluff, though I love a good 4th of July parade with a lot of fireworks and bunting as much as the next person.
No, I'm talking about Kennedy's attempt to drain from the country the last vestiges of a belief that tells us that we -- Americans all, no matter how our forebears came to be here -- are indeed an exceptional people who live in an exceptional country.
… Maybe the Senator felt guilty about his privileged upbringing, though it has to be said that everything he would have wished to force upon us in the manner of leftist collectivism he would never have had to accept himself. His wealth and power would have insulated him nicely…
