It's no secret the print newspaper industry is struggling. It's become all too common to hear that papers, like the Christian Science Monitor or the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, have ceased publishing a print edition and gone completely online.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright addressed this challenge and its impact on a government at the Aspen Institute's Forum on Communications and Society earlier this month. According to Albright, the fourth estate was intended to keep government in check and that countries without a free press tend to be authoritarian societies.

"Finally, just to say - I am a complete news junkie, but I'm still into newspapers," Albright said."

Let 'em go, Maddie. There's a reason readership is plummeting and advertising dollars are vaporizing. The big city dailies have lost all credibility, and they can't compete with the vast universe of information freely available on the internet. There's no longer any need to kill trees for fish wrap and bird cage liners.

Interesting she starts with the Washington Times and hard reporting- then soothes her liberal outrage with the predictable symmetrical pap of the Wash comPost and NY slimes

Hey, newspapers still have a place in this world. I was painting on an old car and looked in my driveway, and saw that God had directed someone to put a free newspaper in my driveway. I knew it was a sign, so I used it to mask the car off. Newspapers are great for that kind of work. Don’t tell me they’re not still relevant, and it cost me what it was worth.

Did she mention that her reprehensible fellow traveler, Helen Thomas, condemns the Obama administration for trying to control the press? Did she condemn the so-called Fairness Doctrine? Did she condemn the decades-long practice of giving tax dollars to support fake arts organizations that are fronts for leftist stooges, or to the Partisan Broadcasting Corporation and National Partisan Radio?
