Web Emergency: No Sweat, Obama's Got It
NBC Bay Area ^ | 8/28/9 | SAJID FAROOQ

Cross cyber terrorism off of your list of things to worry about. President Barack Obama has it covered.

A Senate bill on cyber security that scared Internet companies and civil liberties groups last spring is back with a revised edition and firewalls everywhere are still worried.

Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller's bill would give Obama the ability to take control of private-sector networks during a cyber emergency, a power one Senate source compared with President George W. Bush's decision to halt all air travel following the attacks on Sept. 11.

Obama will shut down the internet by flooding it with stories about his ability to shut down the internet. :-)

The first few postings were copies of the CNET article, but it looks like in the past 12 hours this is hitting many, many different news sources. They are going to have a much harder time posting this than they would have just yesterday.

And as I’ve said 14 times already, the government has always had this power in times of emergency. So let’s find something else to worry about.

Ya think maybe we need a policy on this? I got really tired of reading the same headline over and over and over...

Granted such a policy won't be easy but I quit posting "new" articles before I got suspended. I hope.

Sometimes some of us check in on a periodic basis and miss some of the more interesting posts. We appreciate the fact that some of these posts are repeated.

I, for one don’t have the time to participate for more than 30 minutes or so and appreciate reposts of truly interesting subjects. What does the repost cost? Nothing! Ignore them and let the rest of us enjoy what, to us, is new.

Given my 30 minute participation, I don’t have time to review all posts for the day, unlike some that have nothing betterto do but jump on this site minute by minute.

Correct. Some of us have to work for a living and don't monitor FR 24/7/365. Quite frankly, I am glad there are "duplicate posts." The "duplicate post" nazis are merely selfish jerks, and piss me off.

They should monitor the jocks who post sports scores on the breaking NEWS forum.

I beg to differ. It's the ADD (attention deficit disorder) marketing mindset of the MSM which got us into this mess in the first place --- repeat (something) over and over again and eventually it becomes accepted fact --- that the MSM were/are promoting lies, distortions, and outright mayhem needs to be met with the same tactics.

Fight fire with fire.

There is no reason why this particular topic should be 'limited' on FR .. it involves free speech and an immediate threat to free speech.

I say this ought to be repeated as many times as necessary and let the truth sink in ... ADD doesn't cut it anymore, we are at a crossroads and whatever path we take will impact the entire world for generations. Let 'em post this as many times as they like.

My 2 cents,
- MM

These people are idiots passing a law concerning something they know little about (yeah, I know, shocking). The Internet was designed by DARPA to maintain communications in event of nuclear freaking war. It’s almost impossible to shut down. Mess up? Sure. Shut down? Ask the Iranian mullahs and Chicoms...

I'm with ya on that, Bro ... bandwidth is cheap, but the words spoken by FReepers within all those many repeat threads are priceless. I often read every response on threads which have been repeated, and post to the ones which perk my interest, sometimes across threads which are of the same topic. There is no particular reason why any particular FR thread should stand out from any other, other than to attempt to monopolize for self-aggrandizement or whatever ....

Free speech on FR ... that's the Jim Thompson way ;)

A bill, a law, like this, I’m sure, is only intended for ... emergencies.

Careful, you’ll be told to start clicking on keywords, and searching through all of them.

Careful, you’ll be told to start clicking on keywords, and searching through all of them.

I've used the Keyword search looking for references to older posts that I've read previously.

Not knowing unread posts, I would not know which keyword search to use unless I'm...

Photobucket

And since I never post new threads, I've never been guilty of "duplicate threads." Even then, depending on the source and name of the article, duplicates are inevitable.
