Cops: Jaycee Lee Dugard Hidden for 18 Years, Bore Abductor's Two Kids

She was only 11 when they took her in 1991, a 4-foot, 6-inch fifth-grader walking to school in El Dorado County in a pink windbreaker and pink stretch pants.

For 18 years, police say, the convicted rapist and his wife kept Jaycee Lee Dugard hidden in their Antioch backyard, living in a tent or shed away from the legions of law officers searching for her. Over the years, authorities say, her abductor -- 58-year-old Phillip Craig Garrido -- impregnated her twice and she gave birth to two girls, now 15 and 11.

This is the horrifying ordeal law enforcement officials described today after revealing that Dugard, now 29, had been found safe after all these years and reunited with her mother this morning.

"She was in good health, but living in a backyard for 18 years does take its toll," said El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar.

The apparent end to a case that sparked national headlines began with a suspicious campus police officer at University of California, Berkeley on Tuesday. Authorities said the officer spotted Garrido with two young children on campus, where Garrido apparently had gone to distribute religious-themed literature, a frequent hobby of his. Upon questioning, the officer discovered Garrido was a parolee and contacted his parole agent.

I too am praying for Jaycee and her family....

I hope the perp does not pull the 'IMANUTJOB' Defense so Cali taxpayers will have to pay for his stay at a state hospital....

It apparently was a woodsy area in back of his house so they might miss it.

I think I’ll let God punish him after he dies. satan and his demons will be tormenting him for all eternity. That’s good enough for me.

I don’t think it was a police officer who was suspicious. Wasn’t it a security guard at the college who was suspicious and alerted police?

Currently a search warrant is being served by the Pittsburg police department, regarding about ten prostitutes that were murdered and dumped near an industrial park where he worked....

I was in High School from 64 to 68 and looking back I remember some strange stuff we were told by teachers. Young teachers. I didn’t connect it to the radical left movement until I was older. So I think that they were working back then to radically change things. And these teachers weren’t Hippies. They wore shirts and ties.

Alysson Jacobs is the UC Berkeley police officer (on the right in this photo) whose suspicions led to Garrido's eventual arrest.

Kudos? Between the cops and the parole division this takes law enforcement incompetence to a new level.

Police, when told of the sounds of children playing in the backyard of a convicted sex offender, should have consulted with the parole officer and a judge, and been easily able to get a search warrant. No need for "extra-legal" snooping.

I would have thought so.

I graduated in 1957 so I missed a lot of that. Thank God. I hate what’s happened to our school systems.

No, the officer at Berkeley deserves kudos just for her observation that the interaction between this man and the girls with him was ‘off’. And for following up on him, finding out he was a felon and reporting to his parole officer that he had two young girls with him.

She should not be held responsible for the failings of other departments in years past. Just her simple follow up set these 3 free. When he asked if he could distribute his literature, she could have just brushed him off and forgot about it. She cracked this case with simple observation and a phone call.

When I was 14, there was a young male teacher that made a rant in class about race. All of us could have done without it. It was actually a verbal assault using language that I didn’t hear at home. Now that I’m older, I see that colleges were affected in the 50’s and we got their result in new teachers in the 60’s.

I kinda wondered about that because of the hippie movement (and the beatnik movement) that started soon after that, no respect for authority at all.

Absolutely. I believe that the 60's movement was bred in colleges in the 50's. McCarthy got a bad rap. He was right.

And scaring and shocking a bunch of 14 year olds gets results too. That teacher was popular until his rant.
