Roughly one month ago President Obama said this at a White House press conference:
"So if you come in, and you've got a bad sore throat, or your child has a bad sore throat, or has repeated sore throats. The doctor may look at the reimbursement system, and say to himself, 'You know what, I make a heck of a lot more money if I take this kid's tonsils out.' Now that may be the right thing to do but I'd rather have that doctor making those decisions, just based on whether you really need your kids tonsils out, or whether it make just make more sense just to huh... change... huh... maybe they have allergies, maybe they have something else that would make a difference."
Right there, in just one swipe, the president has slandered thousands of the very best pediatricians, not to mention ear, nose and throat specialists. He does so with an assumption that those who practice medicine are driven by greed, and not the welfare of their patients. Yet let me ask you this, how many children's doctors do you know, or have you visited to treat your family? All across America, in many case, just one doctor has been the family pediatrician for two to three generations of children, and extended family, and friends of that family. In all honesty, do you think such a reality would exist, if these doctors were treating kids like clunkers that can be cashed in for parts?

Why are Obama’s dumb analogies about greedy doctors, any more representative than analogies about government bureaucrats WITHHOLDING CARE TO SAVE MONEY?

Obama’s an idiot. When my son was 8, his knees hurt. All the time. I took him to a specialist who said it was extra cartilage under the kneecap. He said “Now my kids would like to go to summer camp so we COULD operate but I’m thinking we’ll just watch his knees instead” I thought the guy was honest.
His greatest fear is the circumcision of his wee wee. The birthers have a point.
Well, I'm starting to see a lot of parallels between Obama! and Hitler. You see, Hitler (whose highest military rank was a corporal from WW1) thought he was a better strategist than his generals... which explains why the Allies escaped from Dunkirk, why Germany never invaded England and why the Germans invaded Russia at the wrong time...

From what I’ve read around here, the AMA stopped being about medicine and became all about politics a number of years ago. I believe the figure being quoted is that only about 15-20% of physicians belong to the AMA.

These statements he’s making are working against him, but I do agree with his original premise that there’s a profit motive. My own father was talked into a surgery we found out later he really didn’t need. And, when that surgery went all wrong, it led to his death. Doctors and surgeons are not perfect. They’re human, and some are downright incompetent.
The problem with Obama’s original statement is that a profit motive is the reality, no matter what type of healthcare system we have. OF COURSE, there’s a profit motive. There’s a profit motive in EVERYTHING.
And the solution he’s proposing won’t make matters better; it will make matters worse.
Egads, whoever advises Obama are idiots. Physicians have protocol to evaluate whether someone needs their tonsils out. To slander a procedure that helps many children and adults is ludicrous. As he is a father of two children, Obama shouldn’t probably tick off pediatricians.

I have to add, though, that I had my tonsils removed at age 3. Yet, I continued to suffer with sore throats every year. Right now, I’ve been suffering with a sore throat and laryngitis for the past two weeks. OTOH, my children recovered quickly from the same virus, and they all have their tonsils. I have no doubt tonsillectomies help some people, though.
