Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies released a new poll Thursday suggesting parallels between opposition to former President Bill Clintons failed health care plan and the opposition to President Barack Obamas plan this year.
In polls taken by the firm in June 1994 and August 2009, about a quarter of those surveyed supported the reform efforts and more than a third opposed them.
Its déjà vu all over again, McInturff told reporters.
McInturff, who polled for the effective Harry and Louise television commercials that the insurance industry ran during the Clinton-era debate, counts insurance companies, hospitals, doctors and other interest groups following the health care debate among his clients now. He said Obama will ultimately have to trade away the public insurance option to pass a bill if he can get liberals to go along with such a bill.
The president has spent weeks trying to move these numbers, and theyve gotten worse, he said at a breakfast in Washington, D.C., organized by the Christian Science Monitor. Theres no way theyre going to pass a public option.

GOP Strategist: Five to Eight Republican Votes Possible on Senate Health Bill
McInturff suggested that five to eight Republican senators could be lured to vote for the right kind of health bill -- one that doesn't include "a very large public option" run by the government but might include "some experimental (public) program in Vermont" or some type of health insurance co-operative. "There are a lot of different ways" to get to more than 60 votes, he said.
Yeah, ole Juan McCain will rescue us from the jaws of victory and turn this into a defeat....why does he not simply take his Senate Desk sign, cross the aisle with his “friends” and STAY THERE!
That's why they are RINO's.
Not a conservative will however.
Yep, count on McCain, Snowe, Voinovich, Collins, and the rest of the usual suspects to pull Obama’s chestnuts from the fire and douse America in socialism.
That’s why those five need to be targeted.
They will be. Count on it.
There is hope for us.
They had better understand that if they assume that politics as usual will be stomached and that we will stand down that they are responsible for what comes because we will surround that beast in Washington DC and cut off its head.
The only way the GOP can redeem itself after the shame and humiliation McCain has brought it is to defeat him in the Republican primary and send the message to all of America that John McCain does not represent the Republican party.
Hopefully John Shadegg will enter the race against McCain, or failing that, J.D. Hayworth. I do not think Chris Simcox can win the primary, much less the general election. I think he will only play the spoiler and syphon off just enough votes for McCain to eek out a victory against one of these better men.
Charlie, my pal obama, Crist jsut appointed a (closetted?) former chief of staff who NEVER served in elected office to be Sen. Martinez’s one year vacancy replacement.
A RINO who can be blackmailed.
