After Action Report: Rep Dan Lungren (R-CA3) Town Hall
BnG ^ | 8-27-09 | BnG

Lat night a great crowd showed up in Rancho Cordova (just east of Sacramento, CA) for a town hall on health care hosted by Rep Dan Lungren. Staff and police estimated the crowd at over 1,000.

I thought I arrived early - 6:15 for a 7:00 start time, and found myself behind about 400 people already waiting. People continued to stream in and join the end of the line right up until start time. I was lucky enough to get a seat inside in a secondary room they had set up with audio/video. Staff told me there was seating for about 500 inside and they filled every chair.

For the crowd remaining outside they also had TVs and speakers set up so no one was turned completely away.

Dan spoke for about 20 minutes - giving the usual thank yous to staff and local politicians before explaining his position against the health care bill.

Both sides were well represented, but I would estimate from applause and signs that those opposed to the health care takeover outnumbered those in favor of socialized medicine by at least 2:1 - if not 3:1. Dan and his staff did a great job keeping things moving and organized, and they went out of their way to take more questions from people with opposing views than those who clearly agreed with him. (Contrast this with the President and Democrat politicians who are hosting staged events with stacked crowds and refusing to take questions from the other side.) Things went smoothly and the environment was for the most part very respectful. A few low boos were heard here and there, but people mainly showed their colors through applause for the positions on which they agreed.

Kudos to Dan and his staff for getting out - facing the people - and doing their best to make sure everyone could be heard on this incredibly important issue.

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Government; Politics/Elections; US: California
KEYWORDS: healthcare; obamacare; teaparty; townhall
Dan has been posting the video from his events on CSPAN - hopefully this one will get up there too.

Key moments:
1) Dan said at one point (and I am of course paraphrasing) I simply don't see in the Constitution where it allows me to vote to tell you that you have to buy anything, much less health insurance.

2) Following a long winded pre-prepared question from a gentleman holding a sign reading Would Jesus deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions? that amounted to an attempt to 'set up' Dan (who is known as a devout man) - the man ended his question with "What would Jesus say about politician's like you choosing greed over need?" - to which Dan responded - "Well, what would Jesus say about abortion?" - the standing ovations and cheers lasted about 2 -3 minutes.

And contrast this with that coward in the next district (her district starts about 2 miles from the location of this town hall) who won’t face a reporter much less a constituent.

What would Jesus say about politician's like you choosing greed over need?

Jesus would want us to help each other.

Jesus would not want us to be forced to help each other. Still less would He want that forced movement of money being used for abortion.

1) Did he answer his cell phone during the town meeting?
2) Were there any fake doctors in the audience to support his position?
3) Did anyone get beat up by a non-union thug?
4) Did a bunch of supporters crowd out everyone else by taking up the front rows?
5) Did any planted little girls say anything about mean signs?
6) Did he scream at the opposition “what is wrong with you?”
7) Did he ask anyone for identification?

Dan Lungren is a great, great Notre Dame alumnus. All true sons of the Dome are very proud of him.

Thanks for the after action report. Though we went early to his town hall in Jackson, we were among the aprox. 300 - 400 overflow crowd. Early.. but not early enough.

I keep checking his web site to see if he’s going to post any videos of any of the town halls.

I identified his party and district in the headline, but thanks for making sure everyone is clear on who he is.

1) Did he answer his cell phone during the town meeting?
No

2) Were there any fake doctors in the audience to support his position?
No

3) Did anyone get beat up by a non-union thug?
No - one gentleman was asked by Dan to wait his turn to speak, but that was the extent of 'excitement' for the evening.

4) Did a bunch of supporters crowd out everyone else by taking up the front rows?
No - it was first come first serve - and progressives were treated with respect.

5) Did any planted little girls say anything about mean signs?
No

6) Did he scream at the opposition “what is wrong with you?”
No - he stood his ground, explained his position - and allowed for the fact that people can in fact disagree without needing to be hateful.

7) Did he ask anyone for identification?
No - in fact the first question came from a constituent of our neighbor to the west, Doris Matsui (D-CA5), who has refused to do any in person meetings relying on phone conferences to shield her from being outed as the lightweight she is.

Anything else I can help clarify?

He has posted excerpts from some there, but the long form videos are being posted at CSPAN.

I got this link from a constituent email blast - it should be the Citrus Heights Town Hall:

That coward in the next District - would that be longtime Washington DC lobbyist and now Congressman Doris Matsui, of the Sacramento Democrat ruling class family that has held the same seat for 3 decades? She votes however Nazi Pelosi tells her to vote. No need to hear from the peasants.

“You are your brother;s keeper”, not “the government is your brother’s keeper”. And speaking of greed, the elite political class that runs the country , most of whom have inherited wealth, how much of other people’s money do they need to have to assuage their guilt and to prove to themselves how beneficent they are? Is there any limit to their greed?
