No one doubts that the Kennedy surname still carries considerable cachet in American politics, and especially in Massachusetts. However, even the Boston Globe carefully asks whether the dynasty has exhausted itself after the death of Ted Kennedy. A number of Democrats not named Kennedy are lining up for their chance at taking his seat, but people still look towards the Kennedy clan for their cues:
Several prominent Democratic office-holders, including two members of Congress and the states sitting attorney general, lead the list of potential contenders who have been quietly laying the groundwork for a campaign. It has been a politically delicate task, with Kennedy battling brain cancer. The Republican list of would-be candidates is considerably shorter.
Seasoned political analysts say the campaign will be defined by the decisions that two potential candidates with the Kennedy surname - the senators wife, Vicki, and his nephew, former US Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II - make in the coming weeks. Joe Kennedy has not given a clear signal on his intentions; a Kennedy family confidant said last week that Vicki Kennedy is not interested in the seat.
The presence of a Kennedy could overshadow the other competitors and would probably thin the Democratic field. Much of the states Democratic establishment - political operatives, activists, and consultants - would be at their disposal. The formidable local Democratic fund-raising operation, which can tap into donors nationally, is likely to be with either one.

God help us.
Kennedy name carries the cache of philandering, drunken behaviour, waitress sandwiches, and a campaign worker left to drown.
New definition of cache.
Maybe zer0bama by imperial fiat will appoint the appropriate Kennedy lord high Senator from Mass-of-2-$h!t$.
Oh yeah, Joe III is a GREAT replacement! /s
Didn’t he get in a car accident while drunk or stoned and leave a girl paralysed for life? Those Kennedy boys sure know how to treat a girl right:
1) Father of nine, Joe Sr, cheats on wife with movie star
2) JFK cheater
3) RFK cheater
4) EMK cheater: first wife turns into drunk
5) Joe III cheater; tries to get marriage to first wife (twin kids) annulled
American “royalty”, my a**
Victoria Kennedy née Reggie is from *Louisiana*. There is no way that she would be considered for a Massachusetts senate seat. Heck, she'll be lucky if the Kennedys don't have all the doors at the "family compound" re-keyed while she's at the wake.
Massachusetts needs to go with someone outside the Kennedy family, if for no other reason than to demonstrate that public offices belong to the people, not to dynastic families. I say that as someone whose state is overrun with dynasties.
I'm confused, does that mean she is or isn't really interested in the seat?
Maybe Massachusetts will be invited to tiptoe through the tulips with Miss Vicki...
Like nonoe of them are interested, pleasseeeee... right now there are probably enough Kennedys moving into Boston to have their own rotten borough.
Hmmm The HTML looks OK, but it doesn’t display

I probably share the view with most of here that that Kennedy made a colossal mistake. When he learned that he had terminal cancer, he should have approached the Massachusetts legislature immediately, and requested a change in the law to allow the Governor to appoint someone in the event of Kennedy's death. There would have been plenty of time and the appointment would have been made a short time after Kennedy's death.
As the law is now, the people have a right to replace Kennedy via an election. Sure, the legislature can change the law back, but it has to wait until AFTER the election to replace Kennedy.
Nevertheless, my suggestion is that a lawsuit should be filed in State Court to compel the Secretary of State to schedule an election. Simultaneously someone of stature on the Republican side should file as a candidate.
If the State won't set an election, and the State Supreme Court rules favorably for the Democrats, then it can be filed in Federal Court. The Republicans, if they have their own Lion, can either force an election, or tie the Senate seat up for a couple of years. No Liberal vote for Cap 'N Trade, Obamadeathcare, and Amnesty.
I’m sorry. It shows up for ‘me’ in my ping list. Oops.
cache = cachet?
Look for Caroline to pack her bags and move to Boston.
Look for a certain Caroline to put her NYC home on the market REAL SOON!
The U.S. Senate has quickly become the same farce that the Roman senate had become as the social order collapsed in the Roman Empire. It eventually got to the point where no respectable human being would ever want to go near the place.
What about this new poll out that conservatives outweigh liberals in every state? Where is the mention of a conservative or somewhat conservative Republican running AND winning? Now is not the time to just cede this seat to the Democrats.
