Should Romney run for Kennedy’s Senate seat?

I don’t get it READ THIS : http://www.usnews.com/blogs/peter-roff/2009/08/26/romney-for-senate-succeeding-kennedy-could-help-in-2012.html)

"It would be an intriguing thing if, after waiting a day or two out of respect for the late senator, Romney were to downshift and announce he will be a candidate in the upcoming election to fill Kennedy’s vacant Senate seat.

Such an announcement would likely be embraced immediately by the Republicans, who would like almost nothing more than to deny Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada his new, hard-won, 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority. As a self-funding candidate who has already been elected once statewide, Romney has nearly 100 percent name ID. And, in an environment where President Obama seems to be dragging the Democrats down, he would be a serious threat to the Democratic hegemony in Massachusetts’s congressional delegation. Meaning Romney likely would win."

Would he? Obama’s still near 60 percent approval in Massachusetts. Given the creepy dynasticism of the Kennedy cult, you can expect them to lend their weight to a campaign for the seat to stay Democratic (“Do it for Teddy!”). Romney’s not the same pol who won the governor’s race in 2002, either: Remember, his conversion to the pro-life cause came while he was in office so he’ll be demagogued inside the state as a cynical sell-out to the hard right today. And there’s more to lose in doing this than there is to gain. If he wins, he ends up stuck in the minority with the rest of the GOP with no way to pass legislation unless he compromises with the Democrats — not something a guy who’s already suspected of RINOism is wont to do. If he loses, it proves he’s a paper tiger who can’t even carry the moderate states to which he’s supposed to appeal as a potential Republican nominee.

Running and winning would lend him some extra gravitas and name recognition, which he’ll desperately need in a primary against Palin and media darling Huckabee. But even so … seems like a longshot with the potential for catastrophe. Let’s vote on it.

Good idea!

Rather have ANOTHER RINO in the Senate, than to be the candidate in 2012.....

Since we won’t get a Conservative in Massachusetts, Romney would work, but he has to step up pretty soon.

IIRC he sold his Belmont mansion and bought a big spread in CA. I think his time in MA is over.

Mitt Romney ain’t running.
Joe Kennedy will be running.

No obvious candidate for the GOP. But it is a workable race with the low turnout in January.

I think he probably distanced himself a little too much from Massachusetts while running for the republican nomination for President to go back there and win a statewide election now.

Ted Kennedy beat Romney by 17 points when he ran for the Senate in 1994. When Romney left the statehouse in 2007 his approval rating was about 35%. Obama carried the state by 26 points. Why on earth does anyone think that the people of Massachusetts are chomping at the bits to elect Romney senator?

Might be a residency problem, I think Romney moved out of Mass. when he ran for president. Of course they are talking about Kennedy’s nephew from Rhode Island taking the seat. But then again things like residency don’t seem to apply to democrats.

A few flips and a few flops and he’ll be ready to go for it.

Sorry Allah, anyone but a RINO. May as well sign it over to the RATS now without an election at all.
Romney is no Republican, therefore such an announcement would not be embraced by the REAL Republicans.

AP been away snoozing too long?

Run Mitt Run !

I know there’s a lot of Romney detractors on FR, but I’d like to see him run and win. It would probably destroy what ever is left of Romney’s presidential hopes, but it would definitely “change” everything in the Senate.

In truth, as much as I like Governor Romney, its hard to see him winning the Republican nomination next time - when he couldn’t beat McCain last time. Here’s a chance for him to really make a difference.

Admit it Freepers - even if you dislike Romney - you’ve got to be happy about the prospects of at least a reasonably reliable conservative vote in the Senate seat occupied by Kennedy for most of our lifetimes .

Democrats can pick up ground in the South by donning the blue dog airs, but the other side no longer has a viable equivalent in New England. And especially not in Mass, where the legislatures are currently tilted at about 85-15%.

I swear there must be several people here who spend like 14 hours each day waiting to pounce on any poor person who mentions Mitt Romney in even a moderately good light.
