Health care reform meeting gets heated

DANVILLE, Ind. (WLFI) - About 1000 people came to Danville, Indiana, for a town hall meeting on health care.

Fourth Congressional District Congressman Steve Buyer said he does not support the health care bill as it stands, and a majority of people at Tuesday's town hall meeting agreed with him.

Only a small portion of the group were for the health care bill. And while the majority of the meeting was relatively tame, there were some angry outbursts.

As one man spoke out against President Obama saying he was a socialist, people yelled out 'stick to the issues!"

Some booed and others cheered.

Congressman Buyer said minus that particular outburst, for the most part the forum was tame.

"People were trying to stick to substantive issues and here's an individual that you know obviously he doesn't care for President Obama," said Buyer.

"Standing around calling President Obama a Socialist is not helping the problem. We need to work together and get something done," said Cheryl Laux.

One young newlywed couple agreed. Caleb and Chelsea Bullock said they are against the health care reform bill as it stands for various reasons.

"The white house the bigwigs in Washington do not know what's best for us. We know what is best for us and we should be able to handle that ourselves," said Chelsea Bullock.

"There's a lot of problems with the health care system but I think the way they're going about just completely tearing it apart and putting together something that really is only going to be beneficial to a few people isn't really the answer," said Caleb Bullock.

A small portion of the room was for the health care reform bill.

"I truly believe that the health care system is massively broken and if we do not change it now, the change is going to come crashing down on us in a very chaotic way," said David Laux.

But some of those viewpoints were not well received. Those who stood up to speak for health care reform were sometimes booed. While others who spoke against the bill were often met with standing ovations.

The forum lasted just more than an hour.

This was far from a "heated" meeting. The only ones that were out of line were a few 0bots in the rear of the hall.

Heated??? It was the furthest thing from it! There were a few idiots there, but Buyer was great, well prepared and well informed as always.

My daughter (17) went up and personally asked him a question about her choice in a career in the medical field and how this would effect it. He had to leave, but he remembered her for all she did working on his campaign and walked a staffer over to get all her information so he could answer her questions.

I really like that guy.

Calling Obama a socialist is pretty tame. I can think of a few more names that are more appropriate.
