Last Sunday, I took a couple of guests to church. I just met Lisa back in March. But Ive known her husband David for fifteen years ever since he took my intro class at UNC-Wilmington. David just pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. In all likelihood, hell soon be sentenced to eight years in federal prison.
It was really awesome when David reached out to me in February wanting to hear more about my conversion to Christianity. It was far more awesome when he accepted Christ a few weeks later. Now, were working together mostly doing radio shows to warn people about the dangers of mainstream pornography. We try to warn people that it can lead to an acceptance of child pornography by gradual desensitization. We also tell people where they can go to get help.
But last Sunday at church I was slightly embarrassed in front of my guests. The source of my embarrassment was all of the women who came to the service dressed like they had been out at a bar. A lot of these women know that they can meet higher quality men at church than at a bar. But some dont have enough sense to change clothes after making the transition from a bar to a church sanctuary.
One of the worst offenders was seated one row in front of us. She wasnt like all of the other women who were content merely to show their breasts. She had to wear a dress that was thin enough to let the whole congregation know she wears thong underwear. It was even more disturbing than the 13-year olds who wear torn Daisy Dukes instead of wearing a bra.
When women come to church dressed like this they seldom stop to think that a recovering sex addict might be in the congregation. And they seldom stop to think that there are married men in the congregation who are struggling with lust issues. The church should be a place where men can come to seek help as they battle these temptations. Its a shame that some of the temptations are following them into the church and pulling up a chair right beside them.
A few years ago, Tim, the (now retired) senior pastor at a local United Methodist Church did something I truly respected. During camp meeting month (August) he talked about why the congregation dresses casually and sings folksier songs during that month. But then, he turned toward a section of young women and reminded them that some people were dressing a little too casually throughout the rest of the year.
Mike, our senior pastor, did something similar in the summer of 2007. After finishing a series on life choices one that focuses on sexual issues he asked the women to help men who are struggling with lust. His concluding words addressed to the ladies in the congregation were pretty simple and straightforward: Ladies, put on some clothes. Im paraphrasing but Im sure Pastor Mike will agree that Ive captured his point pretty accurately.
A few months ago, Pastor Mike made a similar remark about the way some women dress in church. Once again, he did the right thing. But too many of these ladies are simply not listening - and I use the term ladies rather loosely. So I think the church needs to adopt a more aggressive strategy.
One church in, of all places, Long Island adopted a strategy to deal with this issue many years ago. They started passing out shawls to women who came to church dressed inappropriately. The decision to ask women to cover their cleavage in church probably offended some of them. But its far better to offend a parishioner than it is to offend God.
The Christian church is supposed to change the culture. But lately the culture has been changing the Christian church. Many Christian men act like they dont notice or they dont really care. But the truth of the matter is that they like it.
I think its time for Christian men to stop worshiping cleavage and get back to worshiping Christ. And its time for Christian women to lift and support them with more than just a push-up bra.
There are many women, particularly young women, who want to look sexy and simply do not realize what they are doing to men. We women can never really understand the intensity and aggressiveness of the male sex drive.
We go to a large church, and I’ve heard our pastor specifically address this problem from the pulpit. He talked about how he’d have to quickly look away, while preaching because of the inappropriate dress of some women.
I think it was Chuck Swindoll who once said the Bible tells men to “flee lust” and men will have to “flee lust till they flee life.”
Grown women should know better, teenagers should be advised by their parents about the consequences of their fashion style.
How disgusting. Where are the pictures of this harlot in the offending attire ?
Women have no need to understand it, just whistle and we'll be there at your bidding...
I’m seeing this more and more in workplaces, too. So inappropriate I just shake my head. There’s a lot of it on tv shows depicting workplaces. It used to be too casual/inappropriate....now it’s too sexual/inappropriate.
Q. “On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most important thing in your life, where do you rate sex?
A. “15”
No WHAT church is Mike Adams a member of again?
Culpepe,r Virginia to Wilmington, North Carolina isn’t THAT far to drive on a Sunday mornming...
SO what church... etc.
I ain’t touchin’ that. No suh.
So far, no pics, and I don’t want to break the run of good luck, but there is famous picture of a woman using a pair of underwear as a halter top.

No, no, no... no... no... oh, sweet dear... no... no... no...
Not in our church. Mostly an older crowd, but all the girls and women dress very conservatively.
I was brought up to dress modestly when modesty was a virtue-(actually it still is, but a lot of folks have forgotten)
Today, one can walk into a bank!, a department store!...even some teachers at schools...
....almost anyplace that doesn't require uniforms, and see young ladies flagrantly displaying their wares :^
Mostly I feel sorry for these young ladies...
.I figure they ,either didn't have parents who cared enough to set the example of good values/decorum
..or society's penchant for 'rule flaunting' was too strong a pull for them...
.afterall, movies, TV, etc glorify & sells sex at a premium.
You’re right. While a real man controls his drive to procreate with as many women as possible, that drive is always there. The power of this drive is not something a woman can easily understand.
That being said: I love the way women look, and I have no qualms about appreciating that beauty in a non-lustful way. (It is Mrs. Chan that has all the qualms.) However, church is not the place for sexiness. Most of the young women in our parish are very devout and modest, but there are a few (not all of whom are particularly young!) who were blessed with a bit more Wow than the average gal, and who are... er... distracting no matter how they dress. I’ve fond that the best solution is to sit in front of the statue of Our Lady. The statue in our church is beautiful, and she’s the most beautiful of all women anyway.
Point: Ladies, please have mercy on us poor men and cover yourselves in church. Your beauty is distracting!
