No Immediate Action On Kennedy Succession
CBS ^

Posted on 08/26/2009 12:21:02 AM PDT by Chet 99

(CBS) Although Sen. Ted Kennedy had sought to expedite the process of choosing his replacement to the U.S. Senate, it appears the process will be at least three to four months away.

As CBS chief political correspondent Steve Chaggaris reports, Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick must set a date for a special election to occur between 145 and 160 days from now to fill the vacancy created by Kennedy's death. The two likely dates for a special election would be on the Tuesdays that fall within this range: January 19, 2010 and January 26, 2010.

Thanks to a law change in 2004, Gov. Patrick is not allowed to appoint a temporary replacement, meaning that seat will be vacant until the special election.

Last week, Sen. Kennedy sent a letter urging Patrick and the state legislature to amend that law change to allow for the governor to appoint someone for that interim period, someone who would not be allowed to run in the special election.

The Boston Globe reported over the weekend that the state Senate president, a Democrat, has changed her mind on opposing this idea and has been working to drum up support for that measure.

The state legislature is on recess until Labor Day, so no action is expected before then.

In his letter, Kennedy wrote: "it is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election."

While Democrats hold a potentially filibuster-proof margin in Congress, the outcome of a health care reform bill could hinge on a single vote.

In his letter, Kennedy suggested the governor ensure the fairness of any appointment to replace him by seeking an "explicit personal commitment" his appointee will not seek the position on a permanent basis.

I’m not accusing him of being a liberal, I said he was a Socialist disaster. The worst RINO Governor of any state in the past decade. He deliberately buried the MA GOP and sealed the coffin lid shut. I will work very hard to see he never holds office again, just as I’ve worked very hard to see he never got anywhere near the Presidential or Vice-Presidential ticket.

I suggest you get informed about the Socialist Slick Willard, n00b. We have thousands of threads here on FR for you to get to learn about him and his deliberate sabotage of the Republican party, the Conservative movement, Sarah Palin, his role in the deaths of Brian & Beverly Mauck, and much, much more. I’ve known him for 15 years, how long have you known him ?

“I wouldn’t worry too much about party purity at this point. Getting Romney in the Kennedy’s seat would be awesome...regardless of his baggage.”

Wise comment.

The lesser of two evils is still evil, though it's hard to imagine an idiot like Romney could be as evil as Ted Kennedy.

So then WHO do you LIKE better, that can WIN in that cesspool liberal commonwealth?

Um, the comment you quoted wasn’t written by me. I was rebutting it.

I think Mitt Romney isn’t any different than (Jumping) Jim Jeffords and Arlen Specter.

I suggest you read these threads. I also heartily recommend you talk to Jim Robinson directly about Slick Willard. Tell him how you feel. He’ll be very interested to hear your take.

Oh, so hard to say, isn’t it? I have narrowed it down to the bazillion staffers and family members he has, but OTOH, that may be depriving fellow Dims of their just dues.

I guess it depends on which Romney we get. The one in 2008 sounded a lot more conservative than McCain and would have been a mainstream Republican (he was totally against amnesty at that time). The old Romney...who knows, but still DEFINITELY better than any Dem from that state.

Surely you have a real conservative to run there. The backlash from Obama can be most severe if Republicans run real conservatives instead of RINOs like McCain and Romney.

No! That could not be “Patches”??

What is his current “neck problem”??

Yet, so far, this total RI A-Hole has not declared MA as his residence.

Things could change shortly!

BTW, this CBS headline is funny - I know what they mean, but one could take it to imply that a successor should have been appointed after this news was released in the middle of the night.

Well, that’s what Teddy would have wanted...

Romney may be the only republican that can win the seat and if you actually take the trouble to inform yourself
http://www.ontheissues.org/Mitt_Romney.htm
you will see he is solidly conservative far more than the rinos you are comparing him to. Please help instead of hinder the blocking of Obamas programs.

Better an open Democrat than a closeted one knifing Republicans from behind. And there is no old vs. new Slick Willard. He’s the same treacherous, lying, backstabbing leftist weasel he’s always been. Always putting on an act for the rubes and the suckers. Never trust him. Ever.

Stop spamming this website with Slick Willard lies, n00b. Did you read the threads by our founder ? We don’t endorse Socialist scum like Slick Willard here.

Are you accusing National Review of lying? Did you bother to read why they endorsed Romney?

I guess it depends on which Romney we get.

Therein lies the rub. I don't want to guess which way a two-faced politician will lean after I lend him or her my vote or support.

BTW: "Jumping Jim", as far as I know, was a nickname coined here. That was before your join date.

Romney would almost certainly give an enthusiastic “yes” vote to Obamacare — seeing as it tracks so closely the Romneycare he’s so proud of! I understand MA approval numbers of Romneycare are way down (though I didn’t hear what they are) since people have already seen their taxes go up for it, several hospitals are near bankruptcy, etc., etc. Romney’s still proud of it though . . .

You’ve not been on FR very long. They hate Romney here, irrationally hate him. A lot of it’s anti-Mormonism (I’m a Catholic, not a Mormon). I got banned in the fall of 2007 for defending Romney. They hate Romney and they hate anyone who defends Romney.

Make sure you have a flame suit in good condition.
