The man who took the decision to free the Lockerbie bomber from jail on compassionate grounds accused him yesterday of breaking an undertaking not to celebrate his release.
Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of the bombing, had shown no sensitivity to the families of those who died, Kenny MacAskill, Scotlands Justice Secretary, told the Scottish Parliament. It was the first time that Scotlands Nationalist administration has joined the condemnation of the triumphal scenes.
Aware that Britain is caught in the cross-hairs of international outrage, Gordon Brown is expected today to urge Libya not to fête al-Megrahi further. Appearing before the cameras for the first time in weeks, Mr Brown will hold talks at No 10 with Binyamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, before taking questions from the press. Although Mr Brown is expected to issue a robust defence of his principled decision that the release was a matter only for the devolved Scottish government, diplomatic efforts are being made to restore Britains battered credibility among allies, including the US.
Amid a rumble of accusations that Britain connived at the release in return for trade deals with oil-rich Libya, aides said last night that Mr Brown was likely to disclose how he had demanded assurances from Tripoli that al-Megrahi would not be fêted in the celebrations on Tuesday to mark the 40th anniversary of Colonel Muammar Gaddafis seizure of power.

You are a fool!
I’m shocked! I assumed that a mass-murdering terrorist would keep his promise and show sensitivity. This outcome is such a surprise that no one could have predicted it.
In practice, MacAskill believed Al-Megrahi could keep his promise by not celebrating his release in Libya. OTOH, I did not.
Yup. And as a Muslim coworker pointed out the Bomber knows he is close to death himself anyway so has no reason to worry about his own life anymore so is free to do all kinds of things he might not otherwise consider.
I'm waiting, Kenny.
I'm waiting, Kenny.
This is as bad as Jummy Carter's surprise that the Russians lied to him about invading Afghanistan. Stupidity has consequences...
So, due to overconfidence, inexperience and poor judgment, Carter undermined and lost a strong ally, Iran, that today aggressively threatens the U.S., Israel and the rest of the world with nuclear weapons. But that's not all. After Carter met for the first time with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, the USSR promptly invaded Afghanistan. Carter, ever the naive appeaser, was shocked. "I can't believe the Russians lied to me," he said. The invasion attracted a 23-year-old Saudi named Osama bin Laden to Afghanistan to recruit Muslim fighters and raise money for an anti-Soviet jihad. Part of that group eventually became al-Qaida, a terrorist organization that would declare war on America several times between 1996 and 1998 before attacking us on 9/11, killing more Americans than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. On Carter's watch, the Soviet Union went on an unrestrained rampage in which it took over not only Afghanistan, but also Ethiopia, South Yemen, Angola, Cambodia, Mozambique, Grenada and Nicaragua. In spite of this, Carter's last defense budget proposed spending 45% below pre-Vietnam levels for fighter aircraft, 75% for ships, 83% for attack submarines and 90% for helicopters.
But others, like, me, knew better.
Al-Megrahi should have been ecstatic from the partying in Libya by now.
Geez. If he celebrates what are we gonna do? Get him extradited and put him back in prison? They just let him out for murdering 243 passengers and 16 crew members.
approximately (a huge)% of American men have prostate cancer and live with it for many years.
Is anyone sure this guy is dying?
For some reason, I doubt it.
I listened to the tape on MS this afternoon. The guy totally loses it. He actually puts some blame on the US as he said he contacted the US a few days before the release so that the US would take actions necessary to enforce the ban on celebrating.
Why would Kenny think the creep would keep a promise to a moron?
This idiot knew damn well that this guy wasn’t going to keep his word. It is just like the Clinton’s claiming they were shocked that the NK’s or the Talibsn lied to them. They can deny wrongdoing that way, but they sure as hell knew it was coming.
Seems the Locerbie bomber was none too compassionate during his terrorist act or after his release. Whodathunkit?
He must have forgotten that Ronald Reagan left the presidency in 1988.
They weren’t thinking with their dipsticks!!!
(funny TV ad comes to mind)
Did Kenny really expected he'd honor that oath?
