One thing for sure, if the Israelis attacked the Liberty, it was for a very cogent reason. The Israelis were at war, and Johnston had a habit of meddling where he did not belong, putting US servicemen in unecessary jeopardy.
As a matter of fact, that is exactly how the War in Vietnam was lost by Johnston.
