Mexico hit by lowest rainfall in 68 years

MEXICO CITY - Mexico is suffering from its driest year in 68 years, killing crops and cattle in the countryside and forcing the government to slow the flow of water to the crowded capital.

Below-average rainfall since last year has left about 80 of Mexico's 175 largest reservoirs less than half full, said Felipe Arreguin, a senior official at the Conagua commission, which manages the country's water supply.

"We have zones where the reservoirs are totally full but others that don't have even a drop of water," he said in an interview late on Tuesday.

More than 1,000 cattle have been lost due to lack of rainfall, and up to 20 million tons of crops managed by 3.5 million small farmers are at risk of being lost, agriculture groups say.

The arid northwest region of Mexico has been hardest hit, along with the central part of the country surrounding Mexico City where 20 million people live.

Mexico typically has a rainy season from around June to October, topping up lakes and reservoirs that supply much of the country's water during the rest of the year.

The El Nino weather phenomenon, a warming of the seas in the Pacific Ocean, has induced a dry spell in South America and is likely partly to blame for Mexico's lack of rain, experts say.

Authorities have reduced the flow from the Cutzamala series of dams and rivers more than 60 miles long that supplies a quarter of Mexico City's water to ensure enough is available until next year's rainy season.

Trucks are delivering water to some parts of the capital where cuts have made the flow of water intermittent.

JMPO . . . But others agree with me. This goes far beyond party politics. Our FAKE two party system is broken. Today we are ruled by wealthy oligarchs who control DC with campaign donations. And under the table perks and untraceable cash gifts and whores on the house and free drinks while you are in office.

Excerpt:

* * * Democrats and Republicans are two halves of a corrupt and decaying political system. Nothing that resembles real change can come from either. The gears in Washington need to come to a screeching halt in order to restore the luster of our lost republic. It is buried under a mass grave of closeted skeletons and secrets. Dissent is the only thing that keeps this country on the rails. Differing opinions and free-thinking Americans make this country great and yet the new Obama-Soros Communications Commissar will take dissenting voices off the air because might makes right in his mind. * * *

Greed and corruption and wide open DC sex parties at Barney Frank's pad are just symptoms. Something vile and insidious has infected our Republic. It goes beyond simple corruption and smells very satanic.

“We have deer coming up to the house to get water.”

My Wife has been putting out buckets of water for the deer in hopes they’ll stay away from her tropicals.

We were gone for a few days and the buckets ran dry. The deer apparently took offense and kicked the buckets around.

They keep it up and they’ll be in the freezer.

They keep it up and they’ll be in the freezer.

That reminds me of this old joke:

So there's this fella with a parrot. And this parrot swears like a sailor - I mean he's a pistol. He can swear for 5 minutes straight without repeating himself. Trouble is, the guy who owns him is a quiet, conservative type, and this bird's fowl mouth is driving him crazy.

One day, it gets to be too much, so the guy grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him really hard, and yells, "QUIT IT!". But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever. Then the guy gets mad and says, "OK for you!" and locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet. This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when the guy finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of invective that would make a veteran sailor blush.

At that point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer. For the first few seconds there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly gets_very_quiet.

At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he's so worried that he opens up the freezer door. The bird calmly climbs onto the man's out-stretched arm and says, "Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I'll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on.".

The man is astounded. He can't understand the transformation that has come over the parrot. Then the parrot says, "By the way, pardon me for asking, but what did the chicken do?".

Texas is always in a perpetual drought interrupted by intermittent flooding.

The ENSO condition from April to June of this year had been neutral, and all the way back to last summer was La Nina. El Nino has nothing to do with this drought as it was just officially declared in July.
