Cancer-stricken Sen. Kennedy asks state leaders for speedy process to replace him in Congress

BOSTON (AP) — A cancer-stricken Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has written a poignant letter to Massachusetts leaders asking that they change state law to allow a speedy replacement of him in Congress.

The note to Gov. Deval Patrick and the state's Senate president and House speaker acknowledges the state changed its succession law in 2004 to require a special election to fill any vacancy. At the time, legislative Democrats were concerned Republican Gov. Mitt Romney would be able to fill any vacancy created as Sen. John Kerry ran for president.

ACK! I was in the middle of submitting a reply to your post to me when the thread we were on got pulled as a dupe! No probs, I'll just cut & paste here, if that's ok with you? I sure wish the mods could get a button which allows them to merge dupe threads someday!

Yes on what you just said [I don't have the old post anymore to reiterate it verbatim anymore.] ;-)

Remember too, his daughter Kara even had to accept his Medal of Freedom Award for him last week, and yet no doubt he will be pronounced by the media to be cognitively fit enough to pass clear judgement upon & vote an informed 'yes' in favor of Obama's Government Health Control Act.

I said then it was interesting that, in order to get a health care bill passed which will allow the government to dictate the terms of all the end-of-life decisions the elderly & infirm are required to make, the President is now depending on a man on who is most probably on life-support at this very minute - one who's now being kept alive by extraordinary measures himself - to vote "Aye" on the Senate floor as the Dems arrogantly try to narrowly ram it through without the Republicans' input.

In other words, Obama's got to keep the Kennedy family's Uncle Ted's proverbial plug glued into that wall, so he can get the power to yank the plug of everybody else's 'Uncle Ted'!

Rather ironic, to say the least.

Deval Patrick isn’t very popular right now, to put it mildly. If he appoints someone, it will anger several prospective candidates who have been gearing up to run in that special election.

I’d like to see him appoint Sgt. Crowley!

I see Kennedy (perhaps the single politician who has done the most to destroy America and our institutions to this point) is using his deathbed leverage to try one more time to crater the country he obviously loathes.

A pox on him. I hope his next to last conscious thought is that of escaping his drowned Oldsmobile to leave Mary Joe behind alone struggling in a black, watery, nightmare grave while he figures out how to minimize his political fallout.

His last thought? I hope he finally sees, repents, and accepts Jesus.

N&S Carolina are gorgeous... just have to wonder WHY they keep electing people that leg. against their own interests. That’s all. But ofcourse the other 48 have the same disease.

Ah, I was not even aware the thread got pulled.

Socialized medicine has been the 'hallmark' of old Teddy's political career. And it could well be the rush to get this done was the political pay off from Bama to old Teddy for burying old Hillary's attempt to reenact her Bobby Kennedy 'we can do it better' campaign for president.

There is some irony in their 'Plan' for 'government' to judge the fitness for survival and yet the master mind is kept hidden out of sight because of his unfitness. Got to love how that scientific methodology is getting put into motion.

An otherwise very intelligent relative of mine thought that the legislative Branch of the US government had three parts: the House of Representatives, the Senate, and Congress. I think that may not be an uncommon belief.

This was obvious: We knew they would want to change it back in a situation like this.

Maybe Deval Patrick, Barack’s pal, can appoint himself. Lord knows Patrick’s polls are low these days and he may not win a second term.

I’ll agree this law should be changed the day that Mary
Jo Kopechne walks into the Capitol building.

Cool! We can never have enough Conservatives.

If there's anything I can help with please let me know.

Just imagine; playing around with the situation a bit:

BOSTON (not-AP): Governor Christy Mihos, a Republican, says he thinks the Commonwealth should go back to the old way of replacing Senators—by gubernatorial appointment. “We need to have the right person in there, right away, rather than waiting a few months for a special election.” Mihos says he will work with the State Legislature to change the law. However ailing Senator Ted Kennedy opposes this suggestion.
“We need to have a special election to replace me if and when I should pass on.” Political pundits feel that Gov.
Mihos would no doubt appoint a Republican...

:)

For example, Byrd kept on saying that the Czars are unconstitutional.

Byrd really IS a Constitutional scholar and it will be a loss to the Senate when he goes. I think if he held on, he could become the Democrats' Howard Baker, but he's just not well enough.

>>If he really wanted to be replaced quickly he should resign immediately.

Good point but we all know they’ll take that Senate seat from him when they can pry it from his cold, dead hands.

Play by the rules, Senator. A couple years back Marty Meehan resigned from Congress to become head of UMass Lowell. After a couple months a special election took place and his seat was taken by Paul Tsongas’ widow. In a state like MA you know another moonbat is gonna get in (though we still do have hope...even though 98 per cent of Mass pols are Dems. All 10 Reps, both Senators, Gov, LT Gov, AG,
Treasurer, Auditor, etc. Ted, you KNOW a “right person”
will probably take your seat, not one of those wascally Wepublicans...RESIGN NOW...)*

*—and heck even if a Repub. got it knowing this state he or she would prob be a RINO anyway

The media will be nothing but non-stop, 24 hour, flowery, tear-jerking tributes to ‘One of the Greatest Senators in Human History’.

Think of it as your opportunity to watch every season of your five favorite TV shows back to back. Line them up in your Netflix queue now.

>>tear-jerking tributes

The Boston Globe did a fawning tribute to the Senator. Every day on the Globe’s website there’s a link to it even though it ran quite awhile ago

>>Ted Kennedy
A seven-part series on the Massachusetts senator

speaking of which I’m heading to the Globe’s site now (they aren’t charging for it...yet) to see what kind of comments show up (providing they don’t delete it) to this story.
