Man escapes charges for barbecuing pet dog
By Saeed Ahmed CNN
(CNN) -- A man who roasted his pet dog to enjoy as a meal with his family and friends escaped prosecution after authorities in New Zealand determined the animal was killed humanely.
"We were in a dilemma at seeing something we were fairly upset about -- but being in a position of being able to do absolutely nothing about it," said Garth Halliday, of the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, on Monday.
The SPCA -- which investigates acts of animal cruelty and presses charges -- responded to the house in Mangere, south of Auckland.
There, officers found the charred body of a Staffordshire terrier cooking in a barbecue pit. VideoWatch why owner made decision »
"They had had the dog for a while, but the man told us his wife was getting tired of the dog. He was becoming a pest," Halliday said.
"They decided to get rid of him. But instead of bringing him to the SPCA -- which we recommend -- they decided to have a meal, and cook and eat him."
The family is from Tonga where eating a dog is not uncommon, Halliday said.
"He didn't think he was doing anything wrong," he said.
The incident occurred in February. For the next few months, the SPCA looked into whether the man ought to be charged for the killing. Over the weekend, the organization decided it couldn't because the animal had been killed humanely.
The man, Halliday said, struck the dog in the head with a hammer, rendering it unconscious. He then slit its throat.
"That is the normal way -- if one can use that word -- that animals are killed all over the world," Halliday said.

Too late, they have already invaded Alaska.
“cept up here, seems to b an inordinate number of gang-bangers.
But now that you mention it, lots fewer strays running around - and here I thought it was the large Hmong “refugeee” colony taking the mutts in for dinner....
Staffordshire terrier
It sounds like he slaughtered the dog humanely - much like we do beef cattle. So, I have no problems with the situation, given the culture there.
Like they used to say at the U of Wash, around the dorms... “you ever notice when they’re serving chicken for dinner there aren’t so many seagulls around”?
I believe you mean a horse's NECK, since the mane is made of HAIR.
Horse Fat (I'm not kidding)
On this week's Iron Chef they used an ingredient they said was the fat at the base of a horse's mane. They used it raw! It's considered a delicacy, as I understood it. -Chowhound 10/1/2000 (original episode date)
Horse meat sashimi. Fat is white pieces. I've eaten monkey meat on a stick with bbq sauce. Tastes like chicken!
> Perhaps you would be so kind to explain the legal difference between a pet dog and a pet cow, according to New Zealand law?
Obviously that is a piece of research that I will need to do, as a part of my “making suitable enquiries.” There are several acts I will need to wade thru — this isn’t my job, I’m supposed to look after people and trust that the RNZSPCA looks after animals properly.
I donate to the RNZSPCA fairly frequently. I would expect them to be able to prosecute somebody for killing, cooking and eating their pet dog or pet cat. Commonsense says so.
If they cannot do so because the Law does not allow them to prosecute, then IMO they have been wasting my donations in acting as effective animal advocates. Law advocacy is one of their key responsibilities.
Either way they will be hearing from me.
Though I love dogs and cats very much, I hate cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep, fish, and some other critters enough to eat them. I also hate many plants.
I do think it is peculiar that grocery stores that sell bison and squab don’t sell ostrich. There are probably more of them then bison.
I don’t have a problem with this as long as it was his own dog he was eating. There are many animals that some people keep as pets and others eat, such as rabbits, goats, and even pigs.
I predict in the next decade many more Americans will have dined on canine (if not your own... possibly a tasty city-dwelling neighbor’s dog).
I hate to say it... but the future DOES NOT look rosey to me, at all. No-limit Credit card spending Democrats, crazy whacked-out muslims, wealthy expansionist Chi-Coms, illegal aliens running amuck.
Stock up on powder and lead, my friend!!!
I saw roasted dog in the market alley in Korea all the time. No worse than eating a roast pig, in my opinion.
Spot was a good dog. Real good.
Maybe it had fat hair?
Whoa, I’ve gotten frustrated with my pesky pooch a time or two, but I’ve never had it occur to me to eat the furry booger!
That's the real point of the story. They try to turn NZ into Tonga. Aren't all cultures equal?
Man, those friggin’ seagulls scared me to death when I first got there. They come up almost to your knees and hang around the bus stop down by the HUB. I hated walking thru those things.
Then I got used to it.
Please explain the "commonsense" moral principle by which killing and eating a pig is perfectly acceptable but killing and eating a dog should be a crime, assuming both are killed humanely.

Pigs are agricultural livestock. Dogs are working animals and pets. In the West — predominantly the United Kingdom from whence New Zealand culture and Common laws and Parliamentary processes originate — that is how it has always been.
Dogs are more equal than pigs. That is how it is, and that is how it should be.

(grin!) Aeroplanes were invented in New Zealand, contrary to popular belief.
When Tonga can invent a machine as useful and as technologically advanced as an aeroplane then our cultures are equal.
Hah! I was in McMahon for a couple of years. As it would happen I remember very little of my time there.
