I was about to agree with you (an “assault weapon” is nothing more than a scary moniker to frighten the masses), but then you had to add that last sentence. Since when have quicker follow-up shots and improved ergonomics been a waste of money?

While I agree with the first part, even the US Army, and especially the Marines are taught to use the semi-auto setting, except when suppressive fire is called for.

IOW, you can't miss fast enough to do any good, except to make the bad guys keep their heads down.
