NEW YORK Chrysler Group LLC is planning to build the Fiat 500 small car at a plant in Mexico, according to a report published Monday.
The automaker could also build an engine for the 500 at a plant in Trenton, Michigan, and is weighing building another compact car similar to the 500 in the U.S., according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter.
Chrysler spokesman Gualberto Ranieri declined to comment Monday.

Nice. Aholes.
GM has had zero success with little tiny cars. They can’t make any money selling them and the “Voltswagen” is way to expensive and no one knows how much it will cost to charge it.
Of course, they don’t need to worry about Profits since they are backed by the full faith and credit of the USG.
But the idea that they are going to sell one of the worst little cars in Europe to big healthy americans is crazy.
Mexico might be a good market..keep them there now that we are busy scaping all the good used cars they normally steal or buy.
Well, as Lee Iacocca used to say, “The best built cars in North America!”
“Report: Chrysler to build Fiat 500 in Mexico”
LMAO!!!! This is TO GOOD! They get all kinds of givernment help (our money) and when they start to build cars, they do it that sh*thole to our south! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
(you gotta laugh or you’ll cry)
Union fools must be thrilled. Never forget. The Government is “helping” the Unions....heh..heh...heh
Come on. This is what every American really wants. Chairman Obama says so.
Let’s see; Chrysler goes bankrupt due to UAE and poor managment. Stock holders are told their stock is worthless and the US Gov’t gives the Chrysler assets to the UAE (#1 Democratic contributor).
US Gov’t buys the rest of Chrysler and sells it to the Italian car company Fiat; who has failed to mass produce a single car, and has been unsuccessful competing in the global market. Billions of US Taxpayer dollars subsudize Italy - compliment of Pres. Zero.
Fiat decides to move production to Mexico; and now the UAE not only loses jobs in the USA, but Billions of US Taxdollars are now diverted to Mexico, where Mexican labor will build cars the world does not want, manufactured by a car company that no one wants to buy from - all sponsored by the US Taxpayer.
Only a Democrat could screw up this badly.
Thanks to the high quality 95 Dodge Neon (/s) I purchased from them, Chrysler has been dead to me long before they became a Government Motors corp.
UAW workers deserve this. They voted for Obama and in the end they will get screwed. It did not have to end this way but the UAW goons deserve it.
I bought a Ford product but in the future I may buy a foreign brand made by non-union American workers. I wish ford would move to non-union states and tell the UAW to get screwed.
Is that even “street legal”? You hafta wonder if Chrysler might be marketing these cars for the Mexican/Central/South American markets. I sure couldn’t get into one of those.
If I do my math from auto-newspaper sources, it will take Ford more than 36 months to bring the Fiesta here.
Assume they are a smoother running, well oiled machine, rather two cultures just thrown together.
IMHO Epic FAIL coming on this one....
More importantly - even in Mexico this car will never turn a profit. It is a nice little car but un profitable. The 60 mpg Ford Fiesta blows it away.
I think Ford said they can make that car in the U.S. under $22,000? Toyota is giving Priuses away probably at a loss just above $20,000.
This Fiat sells in Europe for about $15,000. I think it could sell in America for maybe $14,000. If that is what it sells for in the USA - my guess is Chrysler Fiat will lose $5,000 on everyone that is sold.
What does the “500” name stand for? 500cc? That thing looks like a slightly modified Isetta.
Fiat is just getting American taxpayers to build them new factories in Latin America. Fiat is scamming Uncle Sam. I cannot blame Fiat for finding a sucker.
I might be interested. Does it come with a trimmer attachment?
Translation: taxpayers subsidize $5,000 per car.
I’ll buy it as long as Zero guarantees the warranty, personally writes me a check for $4500—my share of the cash for clunkers and allows me to have it serviced at the White House.
